376  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Infrastructure problems in Thames Valley causing disruption elsewhere - ongoing, since Oct 2014 on: July 03, 2018, 10:58:58
Disruption is expected until 10:45 03/07.

And we know what's coming...

Disruption is expected until 12:45 03/07.

Owing to a fault with the signalling system on the approach to London Paddington station some lines have had to be closed which limits the number of train movements that can be accommodated. As a result a number of routes will see a reduction in the frequency of services until such time as the fault has been rectified.
377  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: Cotswold Line - 2018 cancellation and amendments log on: July 03, 2018, 08:25:36
Same again today, and it looks like (as I suspected) the ‘planning error’ is allocating a driver who doesn’t sign the traction.

"05:47 London Paddington to Worcester Foregate Street due 08:15 was terminated at Oxford."

and naturally:

Quote
08:25 Worcester Foregate Street to London Paddington due 10:57 will be cancelled.
This is due to a shortage of train crew.

though it's not clear why it's not going to be started from Oxford (not that that would be of any benefit to Cotswold Line passengers)

and a minor irritation - the 0710 MIM:PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains) came off the Cotswold Line on time and was promptly put onto the relief track and held for 15 minutes whilst a number of services were put ahead of it (one was clearly a late running Cross Country train).
378  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: Cotswold Line - 2018 cancellation and amendments log on: July 02, 2018, 14:49:02
A new month and a very familiar "favourite" makes its first appearance of the month:

Quote
15:50 London Paddington to Moreton-in-Marsh due 17:26 will be cancelled.
This is due to more trains than usual needing repairs at the same time.

but don't worry

Quote
Customers' tickets will be valid on the next available services.

and ditto the return 17:38 MIM:PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains)

and the return:

Quote
08:25 Worcester Foregate Street to London Paddington due 10:57 will be cancelled.

As far as running along the north Cotswold Line is concerned, the 08:25 is certainly one of the less reliable services.

Quote
09:21 London Paddington to Worcester Foregate Street due 11:31 will be terminated at Oxford.
It will no longer call at Hanborough, Charlbury, Kingham, Moreton-in-Marsh, Evesham, Worcester Shrub Hill and Worcester Foregate Street.
It has been delayed at Reading and is now 60 minutes late.
This is due to a fault on a train in front of this one.

Last Updated:29/06/2018 10:53

with the return run starting from Oxford.

And, I presume, unrelated:

Quote
09:50 Moreton-in-Marsh to London Paddington due 11:30 will be terminated at Reading.
It will no longer call at Slough and London Paddington.
This is due to a fault on this train.

Last Updated:29/06/2018 09:14

Given the decision to terminate was taken before the train had started its journey, I wonder what sort of fault it might have been.

And an inconvenience:

Quote
Facilities on the 10:59 Great Malvern to London Paddington due 13:29.
Toilet facilities are not available.
This is due to a fault on this train.
381  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: Cotswold Line - 2018 cancellation and amendments log on: June 28, 2018, 17:28:15
The usual:

Quote
15:50 London Paddington to Moreton-in-Marsh due 17:26 was terminated at Oxford.
It will no longer call at Hanborough, Charlbury, Kingham and Moreton-in-Marsh.
This is due to a late running train being in front of this one.

Last Updated:28/06/2018 16:59

And the usual late call too - regular passengers on this service wanting go beyond Oxford must have a sense of foreboding as it pulls into Oxford...

Return working similarly affected.

And to top it on this sweltering afternoon, the following service - the 16:22 Paddington to Great Malvern - lost over 20 minutes between Didcot North and Oxford, and has just gone through Wolvercote Junction 26 minutes late.

I will be giving this money to charity.

Donation made - GWR (Great Western Railway) are working with Action for Children "to support the mental health of the UK (United Kingdom)’s most disadvantaged children" so that seemed the appropriate charity to receive my compensation money.

Yesterday saw the first running of the 0710 Moreton-in-Marsh to Paddington as a nine coach IET (Intercity Express Train). Today:

Quote
07:10 Moreton-in-Marsh to London Paddington due 08:51 will be started from Oxford.
It will no longer call at Moreton-in-Marsh, Kingham, Charlbury and Hanborough.
This is due to a shortage of train crew.
385  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: IETs into passenger service from 16 Oct 2017 and subsequent performance issues on: June 26, 2018, 07:55:37
Several IET (Intercity Express Train)’s sets failed today with overheating issues causing engines to shut down. Will be interesting to see how this develops over the coming days.

Oh pleaseeeeee no! This is a 21st century train that should be capeable of running in virtually any weather conditions. Thats poor.

And lo...

Cancellations to services on all routes

Due to more trains than usual needing repairs at the same time fewer trains are able to run.

Train services running across the whole Great Western Railway network may be cancelled or revised. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Additional Information
Following a number of broken down trains yesterday evening; we are critically short of trains for todays' service - particularly on our London to Bristol / South Wales / Cheltenham / Worcester routes.

Engineering teams are working to repair as many trains as possible before this evenings' peak; but in the meantime services may be cancelled or formed of fewer coaches than normal.

386  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: When is a short-formation not a short-formation on: June 25, 2018, 08:54:19
A little postscript to this.

My main gripes were that there seems to be no way of finding out about planned stock substitutions (which are not, apparently, short-formations even if the published timetable says the service will be an IET (Intercity Express Train)/HST (High Speed Train) whereas it will actually be a Turbo), and that GWR (Great Western Railway) offers and allocates seat reservations on these services even though they won't be honoured.

As a point of principle, since both my morning and evening trains were affected by such stock changes, I decided to make seat reservations and subsequently put in a claim for compensation for the days when seats weren't available. I was pleasantly surprised that this claim was accepted without quibble and, on Saturday, I received a very generous cheque.

Given I did this to make a point and that I choose to stand anyway, I will be giving this money to charity.
387  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: Cotswold Line - 2018 cancellation and amendments log on: June 20, 2018, 08:06:15
I think that's pretty much a cancellation as far as Cotswold Line users are concerned:

Quote
06:53 Worcester Foregate Street to Didcot Parkway due 08:28
06:53 Worcester Foregate Street to Didcot Parkway due 08:28 has been reinstated.
It will be started from Oxford.
It will no longer call at Worcester Foregate Street, Worcester Shrub Hill, Pershore, Evesham, Moreton-in-Marsh, Kingham, Shipton, Ascott-under-Wychwood, Charlbury, Finstock, Combe and Hanborough.
This is due to a shortage of train crew.
Additional Information
Passengers please await the next available service to Oxford.
Passengers for Ascot, Finstock and Combe please await the next available service to Oxford and then alight at Kingham station and take the booked taxi from there to these intermediate stations.
Passengers from Ascot, Finstock and Combe please await the taxi to Oxford for onward connections.

And yet again:

Quote
15:50 London Paddington to Moreton-in-Marsh due 17:26 will be terminated at Oxford.
It will no longer call at Hanborough, Charlbury, Kingham and Moreton-in-Marsh.
It has been delayed at London Paddington and is now 20 minutes late.
This is due to train crew being delayed.

This is the 25th time this year this service hasn't got beyond Oxford. I'm fortunate in that my employer let me alter my working hours so I could avoid this train but for many that's not an option.
390  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: 14:21 Paddington to Worcester Foregate Street 13 June 2018 on: June 13, 2018, 15:47:19
no oddity - the first 9car IET (Intercity Express Train) is out & about.....

I was wondering about that but didn't think we'd see one on the Cotswold Line for a while yet. Quite encouraging.
