Richard Clinnick's facebook page shows Messrs Grayling and Hopwood in first class coach K. I wonder how much they paid for their tickets.....
NOthing I would imagine, and why would they pay?
32  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: Slightly obscure - where was I this week? on: October 15, 2017, 21:42:56
Apparently there is a law which requires there to be a fair each year on the Monday and Tuesday immediately before the 11th October.  It now stretches for over a mile down the Main Street which makes it the longest street fair in Europe.
It is held on Old Michaelmas Day, as those in Abingdon still cling to the Julian calendar  Grin

I've seen Old Michaelmas given as 10th October in the press, which it was from 1752-1800. During the 19th century it was the 11th, as bobm says. Since 1900 it's been the 12th - but if you're minded to use an out-of-date calendar, I guess using an out-of-date version of it would seem natural enough.
So I guess it didn't move forward to the 13th in 2000 because that was a leap year (whereas 1900, 1800 etc were not)?
33  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Total Weekend Closure of Reading 14-15 October on: October 15, 2017, 14:03:11
There are Sunday morning blockades for the next three weekends currently showing on GWR (Great Western Railway)'s Planned Engineering page.
34  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Great Western Railway: on-board catering, buffets, Travelling Chef, Pullman - ongoing discussion on: October 15, 2017, 13:59:44
Yes, that is a modest improvement. Just a shame my commute only takes me from NLS to BRI» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains) these days, and on the regular occasions I'll be travelling to London I can't justify an extra £220 for an egg and cress sandwich.
35  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Total Weekend Closure of Reading 14-15 October on: October 15, 2017, 13:45:50
That was my understanding but the comment about having to be completed to allow the IET (Intercity Express Train)'s to run tomorrow seemed to imply otherwise.
36  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Total Weekend Closure of Reading 14-15 October on: October 15, 2017, 13:34:33

No indication I've heard of over-running, yet. I fancy that that'll be what happens Graham, rather than another weekend this time - it has to be completed to allow the IETs (Intercity Express Train) to run tomorrow. So I suspect that they'll work till finished, rather than abandon & reschedule
Do I assume then that the intent is that the IETs run on electric as far as Didcot tomorrow? If that's the case, why are there further closures through October and early November?

I believe the consultation period has just ended, so no decision yet.
38  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Porkway Partway on: October 10, 2017, 13:49:41
Wouldn't Ryanair just call it Cirencester though?
39  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Porkway Partway on: October 10, 2017, 13:29:21
Yes, it was the original parkway station. In my opinion the subsequent use of parkway has been somewhat devalued, where the only station in a town is given the Parkway treatment purely because it happens to have a big car park and is used by motorists as a railhead (Port Talbot and Didcot being the obvious examples).

After all, Kemble has just had a big expansion to its car park, and I suspect the majority of passengers don't hail from Kemble, so why not call that Kemble Parkway too?

Maybe Grahame was eyeing up the bench to improve the waiting facilities at Melksham once Breich closes.

There are a couple of pubs called Montpelier.
42  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Total Weekend Closure of Reading 14-15 October on: October 07, 2017, 19:38:23
It would still be a bit perverse not to allow travel via Oxford, particularly if trains are terminating there and there is then a through service to London.
43  Journey by Journey / London to Swindon and Bristol / Re: Person hit by train at Sydney Gardens, Bath - 2 Oct 2017 on: October 07, 2017, 18:10:40
Yes, that's what happened during the now pointless closure (as was the one for Box Tunnel).

As an aside, I recall that the person hit subsequently died. Sympathies to the family and others caught up in the incident.
44  Journey by Journey / To Oxford, Didcot and Reading from West / Re: Melksham to Oxford - suggestions for the Didcot change on: October 07, 2017, 11:07:13
The Journey Planner suggests the 1637 from Oxford to arrive into MKM» (Melksham (Station code) - next trains) at 1803. Though if you were already at Oxford I can see why you would want to keep going to minimise the risk of the later trains being delayed and thus missing the connection.
45  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Total Weekend Closure of Reading 14-15 October on: October 06, 2017, 10:14:06
You'd probably need a couple of weeks to learn that route, especially if you were looking at learning Marylebone as well.  There was talk about it a couple of years ago, but I guess it's not going to happen now that there are only a limited number of possessions remaining before Crossrail and electrification works are completed, and it will not be needed often, if at all, after that.
Gosh that's much more than I would envisaged for a fairly straightforward route (assuming Marylebone wasn't needed). Clearly that wouldn't be possible given the short notice or viable. Out of curiosity why would it take so long?
