31  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: December 2019 timetable recast on: August 22, 2019, 11:34:15
One more question.......I'm assuming that there will be a Pullman dining service, or at the very least a buffet fully stocked and with brandy & cigars on each of these trains?

Nothing quite that lavish I’m afraid.  Though the new trains have been fitted with plenty of longitudinal seats with the main reason that people will be able to admire Taplow’s inherent beauty without needing to turn their heads.

I think you need a word with the people of Titfield TG. Perhaps you can start up a volunteer-run Taplow Thunderbolt!
32  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: GWR December 2019 TT on: August 14, 2019, 13:16:16

What I cannot understand is, why doesn't Network Rail install a portacabin type building on the platform at CJ Halt and electrify the point at CJ and whist the driver is running from end to end of the unit the guard/conductor/train manager can insert the SLT into an instrument in the portacabin which changes the point to the Looe or Liskeard direction and switches a  Coombe Junction signal to yellow with a directional feather and so ALL services on the branch can serve CJ in the time it takes currently to apply the brakes to stop the branch unit, clamber down, walk to the ground frame, unlock it, pull and push the levers of the ground frame to set the route required, lock up the ground frame, walk back to the unit, clamber back on board and reverse the unit to wherever.

The points have to be maintained in the Liskeard facing direction which means that any train to/from Looe has to stop south of the junction. As the guard has to get out anyway, it removes any advantage of moving the signalling equipment to the station itself.

Class 143s can't be used after 31 December, unless fitted with all the disability mod-comms (which none are receiving).

Battersby. On the Middlesborough to Whitby line.
35  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: GWR bans surfboards from IET services on: June 08, 2019, 20:59:17
Not really in recent years from my observations at least. I don't recall seeing many (if any 9 car HSTs (High Speed Train)) specifically for Summer diagrams in the last 5-6 years. Happy to be proved wrong though.

Except for Boardmasters, the Newquay summer trains aren't too busy these days.
36  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: What would YOU put into railway / travel room 101?? on: June 05, 2019, 15:51:10
HSTs (High Speed Train). The sooner the last off-lease stock is gone, the better.
37  Journey by Journey / Cross Country services / Re: Where to change? Too much choice! on: May 24, 2019, 12:05:50
From personal experience, I would definitely change at Bodmin Parkway. Lovely station, surroundings, staff and cafe.

On an IET, the 2nd and 3rd coaches from the front will stop right outside the Signalbox Cafe. They've always got a range of sandwiches, snacks and other bits ready to go. Hot food is also served but 15 mins probably isn't enough.
38  Sideshoots - associated subjects / Heritage railway lines, Railtours, other rail based attractions / Re: Annual passengers numbers - heritage stations on: May 21, 2019, 13:01:20
It would probably be very hard to even estimate usage figures as the majority of tickets sold on heritage railways are all line rover tickets.
39  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: IET Quiet Coach Signage on: May 17, 2019, 21:45:43
For passengers who don't know which way the train travels, having zone information is much more useful.

Also in the event of a 10-car, an announcement saying First class in the front and middle doesn't really help if you're looking for a coach somewhere in between!

Its interesting to see that LNER» (London North Eastern Railway - about) have also reduced their First Class allocations:

225 set: 127 seats
HST (High Speed Train) set: 113 seats
Azuma (Brand name for Class 80x trains on LNER) 9-car: 106
Azuma 10-car: 96
41  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: St.Erth Park and Ride on: April 28, 2019, 19:40:46
Apart from it being a more scenic route by train. Its half the fun of going to St Ives.
42  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis receives locomotive honour - BBC News on: April 11, 2019, 09:16:02
Even with sporting/music/air show events take into consideration, you still only have roughly 50 days where the extra stock could be justified. Guaranteed use on 50 days in a 365 day year isn't really a good investment given most trains are probably bought to work close to 300 days a year.

Regarding keeping two HSTs (High Speed Train) back...although you could make them run this year but they won't be allowed to run after that. May as well plan as you mean to go on.
43  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: St.Erth Park and Ride on: February 22, 2019, 15:07:07
It works the other way round too. GWR (Great Western Railway) will be able to see how the revised service runs (with all calls at Carbis Bay), see how it has been used in practise, then fitting in an hourly call (by request) at Lelant if time/demand allows. I'm guessing extra calls at Carbis Bay are more financially incentive than an hourly service at Lelant?
44  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: FlyBE taken over on: February 22, 2019, 11:21:18
Except for some Flybe staff who are now facing redundancies in order to streamline the business.
45  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: February / March 2019 engineering closures on: January 29, 2019, 11:25:00
5-car IETs (Intercity Express Train) will also feature.
