196  Sideshoots - associated subjects / Railway History and related topics / Re: OTD - 7th January (1957) - Wishing Well Stations on: January 07, 2023, 17:34:52
This gives a good summary.
Upwey(GWR (Great Western Railway)) opened 1871, closed 1886. It was located 600m north of its replacement
Upwey jct 1886, renamed Upwey and Broadway 1952, renamed Upwey 1980, still open
Broadwey station on the Abbotsbury branch opened 1885, renamed Upwey in 1913 to avoid confusion with Broadway in Worcestershire, closed to passengers 1952 and became Upwey Goods stn until closure 1962
This os map of 1886 shows the location

There is a modern tradition of Well Dressing first started in 1986, held in May, it follows the Derbyshire tradition of celebrating the purity of the spring water.

The railways of the County Durham and Newcastle area are very complex as I found out when trying to produce a map of the waggonways associated with the coal and quarry industries

Combe Florey, it is the third time this year. The previous one took some time to clear. It was still apparent when I passed.

I’m told officially by @SW_Help that a few extra services are running and “only” 150 guards are spending all day on duty drinking tea as “spare” turns, as “40 something %” of trains are operating, with Clapham depot closed entirely.

. An @SW_Help person tells me they have 495 train guards on roster today. 143 have duties, leaving 352 - an astonishing 70% - being paid to sit around as “spare.” Because only 47% of the timetable is operating, trains parked idle.
How can the railway function like this?
