Update on Twitter from NR» (Network Rail - home page) Wessex

Quote
Despite lots of testing on the axle counter system since it failed on Sunday morning, including replacing multiple components and calling in experts from the manufacturers, we've been unable to find the cause of the fault. So we need to reset the system which can take a few hours

To do this we can't have trains running nearby which would impact the service we're currently able to run to Yeovil, so we're going to wait until later tonight to perform a full system reset, although our technical experts can't guarantee it will fix the issue.

Therefore, tomorrow we will continue running trains to and from Yeovil, and plan to run a reduced shuttle service between Yeovil and Exeter serving all stations. But journeys will take much longer as they will have to be talked past signals and run at reduced speeds.

If the system reset works as we hope, then we will be able to reintroduce a normal train service gradually throughout the day. However, we'd recommend you keep checking with @SW_Help for the latest travel advice just in case.

Once again, we're incredibly sorry for how long this is taking to fix. We'll do everything we can to understand the root cause of the failure as it's one we haven't experienced anywhere before, and it has happened on technology which is usually very reliable.

20.27 To note: we’re sorry to say the Tweet about shuttle trains to Exeter has turned out to not be possible - although we and @SW_Help would have very much liked to, it can’t be done. That’s partly down to logistics and also the need to test the system without any trains. Apologies.
274  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Sunday 10 July Waterloo-Exeter service decimated on: July 11, 2022, 17:45:01
Now expected to last until end of service Tuesday 12 July.
The fault seems to lie in the Honiton interlocking area which extends from just west of Crewkerne tunnel to just east of Pinhoe.

Problems still ongoing today with early services beyond Yeovil cancelled. However, from 0720 most services are extending to Crewkerne.

The sleeper went via Taunton last night.b
277  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Sunday 10 July Waterloo-Exeter service decimated on: July 10, 2022, 15:15:55
Problems with the signalling mean that apart from a few delayed services in the morning no trains are running between Exeter and Yeovil Junction.
SWR» (South Western Railway - about) Journey check gives this reason.

We have been informed that there are multiple axle counter failures between Yeovil Junction and Exeter St Davids. Due to this, all lines are blocked and trains will not run between these stations.
Due to the severe nature of these delays, you are advised not to travel between Yeovil Junction and Exeter St Davids.

This was the press release and video of Grant Shapps yesterday.

Apparently the Victorians had 4aspect colour light signalling!

The similarity between the two feeds suggests the text originated in the DfT» (Department for Transport - about) and the SoS and Morton assumed its veracity!

It is not just railway bridges, the Hanging Chapel at Langport was struck by an HGV two months ago and the road is still closed

The broken down train seems to be the Whatley Quarry to Tarmac service, near Bedwyn. So main line services being diverted via Melksham

Ventured to Crewkerne station on Saturday to pick up Marion’s daughter and the station car park was almost full. Dropping her off on Sunday it was not quite as busy but around 30 people were waiting for the 17.19 to London.

The Jersey sidings were added in 1938/9and are the only ones now available. The Jubilee sidings were added in two groups, the first in 1935, King George V’s silver jubilee, and the second at the same time as the Jersey sidings. The land used for the Jubilee sidings is now a commercial estate.
The footbridge was a good vantage point, especially for the engine shed, now a housing estate. Incidentally, while going around the shed one evening we were invited onto the footplate of 34015, Exmouth, by the cleaner and then allowed to drive it back onto the turntable.
