317  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: HST derailment, near Stonehaven, 12th August 2020 on: March 10, 2022, 09:04:15
Given the report’s concerns on the HSTs (High Speed Train) the plans of GWR (Great Western Railway) to replace them with IETs (Intercity Express Train) seems to be a sound judgement.
Note that a risk assessment has to be carried out on the HST relating to their further use and to ALL pre-1994 rolling stock(the date that the crashworthiness standards came in. That covers all the 15x series, 165 and 166. This might have implications for the GWR and the WoE lines 159s.

The GWR (Great Western Railway) services to/from Brighton, after much inevitability, will final meet the axe at the May 2022 timetable change

An extremely handy service for commuters too, it's a huge shame to see it go. It closes a unique era for Brighton

323  All across the Great Western territory / Diary - what's happening when? / Re: Snowdrops at Great Chalfield on: February 22, 2022, 14:02:20
A number of gardens in the area open at weekends in February just for the snowdrops. Margery Fish’s garden at East Lambrook has the national collection of snowdrops and was worth visiting. Two others we visited, Forde Abbey and Mapperton House, were suffering from the lateness of the flowers thus year.
All three were very busy, probably, like us, people were just glad to be out and about among this sign of spring.
324  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The West - but NOT trains in the West / Re: Regular shopping - where do you get your groceries on: February 21, 2022, 13:13:47
We do our non perishable items by online delivery, usually just over the minimum allowed

We shop in person for the rest -  the veg comes from one of two local farm shops while the meat comes from a local butcher. The bread comes from a local bakery. The farm shops also sell meat and bread from other small bakeries.
We are well placed with a number of small independent shops providing most of what we need. There are five local bakeries with their bread available in a variety of outlets, including village post office/shops. There are four butchers, one of whom can trace their business back to Bridport in 1515!

In October/November 1940 two siding were laid on the Bridport branch for rail mounted anti aircraft guns. One at Bradpole near the crossing and the other at Loders by Boarsbarrow hill. However by 1941 they were moved away from the line. The photo shows the location of the Loders siding, the branch was to the left of the photo.

3 Broadway station, that opened with the Abbotsbury branch in 1885. It became Broadwey in 1896 and Broadwey (Dorset) in 1906 before becoming Upwey in 1913.

The first Upwey station (closed 1886) was on the main line to Weymouth north of the current Upwey station (originally called Upwey Junction) which opened in 1886

This increased the competition with the LSWR (London South Western Railway) to Plymouth and on the 1st July that year the Salisbury train crash occurred. Cause was excessive speed but underlying this the reason for this excessive speed is still uncertain.
