1  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: 2023 Delays and Cancellations on: December 19, 2023, 22:23:52
Really Guys
Whether GWR (Great Western Railway) cannot decide if they are to run a train or not is not the issue here. Once they have decided to go public and the decision has been made  the train is cancelled. I am finding it difficult to understand an argument which supports the use of "will be cancelled" in case they might run it. If circumstances do change and a previously cancelled train can run the standard reinstatement message can be made. Please do not create another situation where railway communications are less than 100% clear

I might be sticking my neck out here but I cringe every time I read   xxxx WILL be cancelled. If the decision is made not run a train it IS cancelled. If there is an overwhelming desire by those who update information to us the word WILL could they not say the train WILL not run.
3  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: AQ23 - 11th December - Identify the timetable on: December 11, 2023, 21:48:40
I also think 3 is Hereford, Worcester, Oxford & London but not sure about Stratford. If we are right about the line just look at the timings of the 0704 from Hereford, the 0750 from Worcester Shrub Hill. 1 hour 46 mins from there to Paddington and with a seven minute stop at Moreton!!!!

We have to presume there will be other incidents as well as OHL (Over-Head Line) issues in the future and there will be a continuing need to evacuate trains on running lines. For me the major question coming from this incident is why does it still take a ridiculous amount of time to "free" the passengers. I would like to have an accurate and true diary of management action starting from the time the OHL problem was reported.
I ask this as someone who has "moons ago" been the manager on site evacuating trains on the South Western Division (time clue there) of the Southern Region. On one occasion I had to attend a review at divisional headquarters called solely to discover why it took 75 mins to evacuate a train near Shalford Junction.
With respect, I do not want to hear answers which major on health and safety, these restraints have always existed (more so on the third rail region!) Perhaps the sharing of the "emergency control management" structure might reveal the something.

6  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Victoria Closure Sunday Evening on: October 25, 2022, 22:28:53
If the front of the train was in a position to detrain passengers safely (even if slowly) it should have been done for both customer service and operational reasons (ignoring them might produce an action by frustrated passengers which could produce further problems for the railway). Is it not standard police policy to remove from the site those not directly involved in an incident? I am also not convinced by the suggestion that the scene might be managed by those who had been potentially traumatised by the incident. It would have been managed by the police and an operational duty manager. From what has been said this appears another example of people in control reluctant to make a decision. BUT as so little detail has been officially released one needs to exercise some caution. Were the events such that some confidentiality was needed or were they too embarrassing to reveal. I would really like to know.
7  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Calls for trains from Reading to London Waterloo to be made faster on: July 21, 2022, 23:46:31
Back in the early seventies one train an hour to Reading was first stop Staines, I think in 25ish minutes. They were BIL or HAL units and gave you an "exciting" ride.

Is that 1938 tube stock in the photograph, it looks more like Central line stock to me (the front roof ends are different)
9  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: lumo. FirstGroup's open access operation on ECML on: September 07, 2021, 16:06:49
And the fares quoted are singles. My experience suggests that trying to get cheap return air fares for super cheap outward fares is rather difficult!
If you price your own time Lumo v WhizzAir for the difference in journey times (approx 6.5 hours) you get to an almost Victorian rate of c30p an hour

I would be  particularly upset if my house was demolished because of a consultation! Perhaps the building of a railway may be a more acceptable reason.

14  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / Re: Request stops - new technology to stop just in case slow downs. on: December 04, 2020, 16:33:19
How do you effectively gain any timetable benefit from this when you don?t know how often a train will have to stop. To be sure of keeping to a timetable you will have to presume the train will stop everywhere and that offers nothing.
I know this principle is used in many areas already but, generally, it is on lines with slower lines with slacker timing.

If you think  the claim that a Clitheroe to Hellifield reopening is a little disingenuous, how about Watford to St Albans Abbey which is open and overhead electrified!!
It currently has a bus service because of the virus. Is this the start of there being a reopening inquiry after each time there is a bus replacement service???!! Smiley
