In Cornwall for example a number of business travellers drive to Exeter and take the London train from there.
I've done this on several occasions, it is far cheaper and quicker to drive to Exeter or taunton and park at my relations, and get a train from there to anywhere else in the country. As an example it takes approx 2 hours and ^15 quid of petrol each way to Taunton from my house near Hayle. Looking at tomorrow morning as an example St Erth to Taunton quickest journey time is 3 hrs 14mins, average is 3hr 30. ticket prices for peak time saves ^50-60 a return going from Taunton instead of St Erth at least, (last time i travelled, may have changed in around 6 months)

Not sure if appropriate to post, but Tesco Extra in Pool, near Redruth have a small range of "local" railway books at half RRP. bought one for myself this afternoon. They are marketed in the "local books" section and had 5-6 titles of cornwall, and south west rail books. I purchased a cornwall now and then photos book, admittedly most of the now are actually early to mid 90s, but still may be of interest to some people on here

To be honest, 143's would be well suited to the Falmouth and Newquay branches rather than in Devon!
except the pacers couldnt handle the sharp curves of these branches when first introduced, causing their withdrawal from cornwall when they were first introduced

Vacman thanks for the comment about Falmouth, I recall travelling on one to Falmouth but thought i'd imagined it, must of been around 2006 as I was about 17-18 years old. Recall it being in a green livery the specific one i travelled on, perhaps on hire from central trains, or cascade.

I have to say, I took a 'quick Google' and didn't find 'plenty of results'. Could you richwarwicker, in answer to the OPs▸ request, link to some of these results you got? All I found was that Northern 158 too. Nowhere near Newquay though. I've just realised none of the results are actually newquay, didnt look at the actual pics, just that there was a few hundred results on key word search for, "class 158 at newquay"
