2791  All across the Great Western territory / Introductions and chat / Re: Parking "offence" - advice needed on: October 01, 2011, 10:52:02
Reading has pay (on foot) before you exit.  Seems to work OK and in a way is more customer friendly.  You pay for the time you have actually parked and it is less likely you will be rushing when exiting the car park than when entering it and having to pay and display with the minutes ticking away to your train.
I much prefer this method anywhere, it means not worrying if your held up that you may overstay your pay and display ticket.

This used to be the case in the massive Charlotte St Car Park in Bath - however, oddly enough, pay-on-foot-before-you-exit has just recently been removed and the more common "cash and flash" machines re-installed instead. Not sure what the council (BANES)'s thinking was - obviously there must be a good reason for it. Delays at the barriers on exiting perhaps? Malfunctions with the barriers? (you had to feed your receipt into the machine to make the barrier pop up).

There was something similar in Chippenham station car park YEARS ago, with a physical barrier popping up from the tarmac which prevented you from leaving unless you fed a receipted ticket into the machine. That idea didn't last long either. I suspect it's the maintenance and repair cost which puts the mockers on these schemes. Or maybe it damaged one too many cars - they looked pretty blooming lethal.

I worry they may of done this to increase revenue by increased fines for exceeding parking time etc

cyclists cycling 2 or 3 abreadth on roads is a common thing i notice lately, preventing cars from getting round easily.
I noticed in Spain on popular cycle routes signs for cyclists telling them to ride single file only

Its pretty much an hour to drive,

Its about a 30 min walk from taunton station to college, so trains would be pushing it!
2794  Journey by Journey / North Downs Line / Re: 23/09/11 1803 Gatwick Airport-Reading on: September 27, 2011, 23:18:30

My understanding was that the ex 18.03 GAT to RDG(resolve) went into 4a/b to form the
19:34 back to Gatwick.

I was not referring to the 1803, i was referring to a service whilst i was at Reading and a PA (Public Address) announcent advised it would be leaving from platform 3, this was mid morning on saturday
2795  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: Booked DMU formations on Cornwall for low summer on: September 27, 2011, 23:16:26
The Falmouth trains run to a half hourly timetable as you know, so to change time to connect with 1 Main Line train could throw the timings out for the rest of the day.    It is not that there is a long wait now with the 2 per hour.   Previously, The Timetable could have been worked rouund connections and could have been more flexible in the planning.
I know, and seeing the number of people waiting for this service, before the london arrival its a good job falmouth leaves first. Most of the falmouth passengers for the 1620 were Truro School students

Falmouth is still in need of 2 2 car units from my observations on Friday afternoon.
I took the following picture of the 1620 ( a single 153). I initially thought it was stupid that a Falmouth train leaving 5 mins before a Paddington- Penzance arrived, however the photo will show why its a good thing the Falmouth leaving just before the main line train arrived.

Surely another reason why an Unfounded Rumours and Gossip section would be a valuable addition.  That way, possible happenings could be flagged up, but moved to appropriate forum slots when conclusively acknowledged to be fact.

Thats a good idea,

Phile, i am finding your postings informative and interesting, am reading but have no furtheer comments to add, take note of the number of "views" of the thread rather than the number of replies

Yes of you select free, there is 5 sub categorys, one being maps, which contains the moving map, a static network map, a tube map, and a London tourist map. There is also news headlines, safety info, and couple others there. Although I'd say the volo is good value for money on a journey of more than a couple of hpurs 1.75 from the buffet with free set of ear phones. its 3 quid if you pay by sms and you don't get the headphones then
2800  All across the Great Western territory / Your rights and redress / First Weekend Upgrade complimentary snacks on: September 25, 2011, 18:34:50
Upgraded to the Weekend First today on a service from Reading to Truro. When i went to the buffet to get a drink and crisps, i was told by the buffet staff that crisps werent a complimentary option. Anyone able to verify this, as FGW (First Great Western) website states,
Quote
Weekend First customers may benefit from the extra comfort that First Class accommodation offers, including complimentary refreshments of hot drinks, mineral waters, biscuits and crisps

EDIT I've deleted the exact service to  prevent staff identification!

2802  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: APCOA errors on: September 25, 2011, 17:55:06
i've sent the picture to Apcoa, so hopefully will be sorted.
Would it void a parking fine at this location on this technicality, i doubt it as the coins machine, actually accepts debit cards!
2803  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon / Re: line north from newton abbot on volo on: September 25, 2011, 17:43:22
ok, but the Fowey line isnt shown on the system, only routes FGW (First Great Western) operate along. Thats why it confused me a little
2804  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: APCOA errors on: September 25, 2011, 17:41:00

2805  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / APCOA errors on: September 25, 2011, 17:35:00
noticed whilst parking at Truro that there is an error on their APCOA (Car parking company used at GWR (Great Western Railway) - controlled stations in the area) board, spot the error in the photo below!
