3061  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / gwinear road level crossing failure on: July 29, 2010, 10:36:42

3062  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Class 180 Adelantes - discussions, including their return to FGW on: July 23, 2010, 11:55:42
Actually in this case I'm going to disagree a little with what matt473 said. The reason is that railforums.co.uk is entirely public, so anyone on the internet can read that post without having to register or log in. I would therefore consider that whoever posted that has knowingly placed that information in the public domain.

So, if you're going to make a claim like that again based on a post on a public forum (for which purposes I'm thinking of one where anyone on the web can view the post in question without need for a login or resistration) then please don't leave it unsourced. Tell people where they came from so that they can investigate for themselves.

I would guess that this one may well still be in the realms of fantasy (A said to B who overheard C at the depot saying...), but I'd love to be wrong.

And to keep things tidy, since there's already a thread running about the Adelantes, I'm going to merge this one in.

Edited to change my mind after discovering that the post in question on RailForums is publicly available: if anyone else wants to read the ensuing discussion it's here.

to add to this the rail forum thread comes up in a google search if you search for right target words so fully available quite easily even for someone who has never heard of RailForums!

First buses state in their conditions of carriage, that only 1 dog is permitted per bus, so if there is already another dog on board, you will be refused travel,
3064  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: Strange announcement at Bristol on: July 16, 2010, 17:05:20
was the service that was supposed to be arriving at the platform, perhaps a different service was due on that platform, and passengers waiting were for a different service!

All I can think of to ask is why the person taking the photo was standing on the tracks. One hopes they switched off the live rail.

loved this comment on your link, so hes worried about the photographer but not the engineers
3066  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: HST hits tree at Lavington today - 10 July 2010 on: July 15, 2010, 11:47:16
there is currently 2 cabs in DML in Plymouth for refurbishment i believe!
Correct. Those two cabs are off / for Grand Central power cars which are currently in Brush for fitting of MTU (Motor Traction Unit) engines. The cabs are being refurbished under subcontract by Babcock Marine (the former DML).

would this mean there are cabs available spare when these refurbishments are complete, or are they not available being Grand Central cabs?
3067  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: HST hits tree at Lavington today - 10 July 2010 on: July 15, 2010, 11:00:45
Thanks for that insight into the 'gubbins' on a HST (High Speed Train) power car, Sprog.

I take it 43041 is in St Phillips Marsh at the moment. Will repairs and fitting of a replacement cab be undertaken there or is the PC likely to be removed to another TMD (Traction Maintenance Depot)?
Finding another serviceable cab to put on it will probably be more of an issue. From what I gather from elsewhere there is only one cab not attached to a powercar (which is itself damaged) and the moulds used to manufacture the cabs are not currently useable.

there is currently 2 cabs in DML in Plymouth for refurbishment i believe!
3068  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: FGW's ban on disabled scooters branded 'unjust' (this is Somerset 03/07/2010) on: July 14, 2010, 18:04:01
with the bus example above the bus is licenced to carry x amount of passengers seated, or y amount of passengers plus z amount of wheelchairs, y being lower than x so if the y figure is already exceeded the bus is not licenced to carry that wheelchair passenger as well!
FGW (First Great Western) are within DfT» (Department for Transport - about) guidelines not allowing travel, as the DfT feasibility study can be found here http://www.dft.gov.uk/transportforyou/access/tipws/cmspt/carriageofmobilityscooterson6163

see points 9.2 Heavy and Light Rail, and Appendix C - Train Operating Companies' policies for the carriage of mobility scooters

FGW policy is to only carry folding wheel chairs, another interesting point is that the these mobility scooters have a maximum safe gradient of use of 8 degrees, with a majority of stations requiring up to a 16 degree ramp to access trains from platform, which exceeds permitted usage of the scooter!

My local petrol is 112.9

Tomorrow I will be car less and it will be costing me more to use public transport for where I need to be tomorrow.

down here (cornwall) Asda unleaded is at 112.9, everywhere else is 117.9-119.9, Asda is 20 miles away, but i have to go to Falmouth at least once a week, so i try to need petrol when i'm in that area!

3071  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: HST hits tree at Lavington today - 10 July 2010 on: July 12, 2010, 11:57:29
FGW (First Great Western) has 118 Class 43s and 53 rakes of MK3s, not all of which are in traffic due to servicing, so if they can't supply enough sets each day out of that lot, even with a number of 43s and this rake needing emergency repairs, one does wonder. And I don't know where they might be getting any more Turbos from, the fleet is flat out already on weekdays and one or two sets at a time are out of traffic for refresh work, so precious little slack there.

I can't remember the source, but someone posted after the Penzance derailment that all power car sets were in traffic, so losing 1 will knock a set out of use.  I guess losing another will not change the number of sets in traffic.

i have also seen this, and cant remember the source, this leaves at least 3 sets out of action
(pz derailment, tree damaged set, telegraph pole damaged set) any others i'm forgetting? i think i seen there was only 2 spare sets, so this would leave a set down at least, and this is on the basis that the other 2 spare sets were ready to go when these have been withdrawn due to damage!
3072  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: HST hits tree at Lavington today - 10 July 2010 on: July 12, 2010, 06:05:47
Rumour that another HST (High Speed Train) powercar hit an electric cable pole at Hayes & Harlington today too.

Anyone confirm this?

there were reports of an obstruction on the line in that area, and a paddington-plymouth train terminated at Slough, and was restarted from exeter, i initially thought due to the tree incident, but why wouldnt they of terminated it further along such as at reading?
3073  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Excess fares queue at Reading train station? on: July 09, 2010, 14:34:19
You will be able to purchase a ticket with cash, cheque and most credit and debit cards. A list of accepted cards will be displayed clearly at each ticket office window. Ticket office opening hours will be displayed at each station along with alternative methods to purchase a ticket. When purchasing a ticket from our ticket offices you should not have to queue for more than 5 minutes during peak periods, and no more than 3 minutes outside of peak periods. (Peak periods are busier periods of the day when customers are travelling to and from work, e.g. between 0700 and 0900.) Regular checks will be carried out to ensure that these standards are consistently met and any shortfall rectified.

Taken from the passenger's charter, so the 'text book answer' is - at no time should you have to queue for  more than 5 minutes.

As a regular customer I make allowances for 'operational difficulties' when buying a ticket, but the level of staffing in
some Devon ticket offices has become poor. You wonder as a business, FGW (First Great Western) would make it easier for the 'customer' to
give them money. What annoys me is that these are not recent problems, but some I would suggest, we have had for
 years.

take a photo of the station clock in the background, with the queue visible at two points showing the same people still queueing more than 5 mins later, if you then got issued a penalty fare you have evidence that FGW have breached their contract to you (the passenger charter) and there fore the penalty fare would be overturned on appeal, and if it wasnt then it would be thrown out of court with costs given to you! if a service breaches their contractual agreement, you are surely entitled to a refund, or compensation, if more people knew this then i think there would be some high profile court action against some TOCs (Train Operating Company)

3075  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Night Riviera sleeper service - Cornwall to London on: July 04, 2010, 12:49:01
the bbc have finally caught up 2 weeks later than the announcement
Page last updated at 09:48 GMT, Sunday, 4 July 2010 10:48 UK (United Kingdom)
The overnight service takes about eight hours from Penzance to London More carriages are being added to the sleeper train from Cornwall and Devon to London.

First Great Western said the move was necessary because of an increase in the demand for the "Night Riviera" service from Penzance to Paddington.

The company believes this is because people are trying to save money on London hotel costs.

Regional general manager, Julian Crow, said First Great Western is considering expanding the service further.

"We're watching carefully how business develops," he told BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) News.

The sleeper carriages can now accommodate 60 passengers during the week and 75 at the weekend.

The weekday train leaves Penzance at about 2130, arriving at London Paddington at about 0530 the following morning.

Thousands of people signed a petition when the service came under threat in 2005.

It was running at a loss and had to rely on a ^5m annual subsidy from the Department of Transport, but when First Group was awarded the new franchise from April 2006, it said the service would be retained and extended.

"This is a very good step forward," Mr Crow said.
