Thanks…no wonder such a ‘good’ figure has been announced then!  Shocked

But, yes, the media do hype it…just as they always do with railways I guess?

The media is making out everyone is being stranded all over the place but the stats don’t support it being that bad. They’ve found the few hundred people who’ve had issue and exaggerated it. Could find a similar number of affected rail passengers too!

By what metric is a flight classed as ‘delayed’?
It’s proportionate to distance travelled.

Flight distance   How long the delay has to be
Less than 1,500km   2 hours
Between 1,500km and 3,500km   3 hours
More than 3,500km   4 hours

I wouldn’t blame anyone for making less journeys by train this year - strikes and staff shortages are clearly going to cause problems.

Same goes for people taking less flights, less ferries and less road trips, as all are likely to be affected.  I read of delays at Dover today, planned motorway go-slows (not to mention fuel costs) and we all know what a state the airlines are in currently.

Are the airlines in the state the media portray? Or easy targets?
Tui the worst portrayed by the media released that less than 0.5% of their flights were cancelled or delayed in June. How does this compare to rail TOCs (Train Operating Company)? Those 0.5% are getting all the media, whereas the 99.5% without issue isn’t newsworthy

Next week I’m travelling to sheffield for the womens euros semi final. I’ve tried to do the cheapest travel options and killing a couple of birds with one stone on way home as something the daughter wants to visit in London.

Monday 25th
fly Newquay to Manchester with EasyJet, £18.99 for me and £9.99 for 1 child.
Train Manchester to Sheffield, advanced singles totalling about £6 for 1 adult 1 child. Booked through Avantis website  as my bank had a 5% cash back offer on Avanti.

Wednesday 27th
National express Sheffield to London £11 (I also booked a cheap rail advance of around £26, which I’ve applied for refund due to strike day) I bought the express ticket before strike dates were announced as a back up as it was known strikes were going to happen just not when!

Thursday 28th
London to Gatwick by unknown method, haven’t made this plan yet.
Gatwick to Newquay, eastern airways £40.99.

I priced the full itinerary by rail and there was legs with no cheap advances so total rail fare would have been  almost £600!

22nd august Trip  to explore Thames valley returning 23rd august using my first group staff offer  for first class day rovers. .

There are buses, and Botley Road buses. One is shorter than the other.

That's a bit dangerous, isn't it?

Not if correctly allocated and managed. I know of a double decker route with a 14’5 bridge. Multiple operators run double deckers underneath. Those operators have double deckers ranging from 13’10 to 14’10 in their fleets. There has been no incidents at that bridge!
51  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Car share - any experience? on: June 15, 2022, 09:19:51
I car share with a colleague. We start and finish within 10 mins of each other Monday to Friday and live 200 yards apart.
All goes well until we have an issue being coach drivers, excess traffic, broken down, then one of us is left waiting for the other for sometimes an hour or more. Saying that only happened a couple of times
52  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon / Re: Through fares to Dartmouth available via GWR - Summer 2022 on: June 14, 2022, 20:57:31
Liskeard to Kingswear 1 adult 1 child £67.20 return
Liskeard to Paignton 1 adult 1 child £12.85 with my family railcard (22.80 without rail card)

Would 1 adult and 1 child really cost £55 for a round trip Paignton to Kingswear. Nope it’s £19.95 adult and £13.50 child. Total £33.45 plus  the non railcard fare of £22.80 is still only £56.25

There is a major failing in the through  fares. The Convenience of a through fare adds over an extra £10 to the cost.

(All off peak fares)
53  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: please come to Cornwall this summer if you have a bus pass on: June 05, 2022, 16:27:59
Cornwall council removed the restriction in April 2019. Their reasoning was comments from bus operators that the first service after 930 were full and standing and on particular days (Daish’s and Shearings  driver day off in Newquay) leaving people behind on hourly services just after 930 when significant spare capacity was available pre 930.

Depends on destination?
Do I need formal wear?
Is it hot or cold?
I frequently use Ryanair and play them at their no extras game just taking a back pack.
If I just need normal clothes and it’s hot, yes easily. I’ll buy toiletries at destination, and hand wash t shirts and underwear. They dry in a couple of hours.
I can comfortably get 7 pairs of underwear, 4-5 t shirts and a spare pair of shorts and
Swim shorts  in my Ryanair “small” size backpack.
Make sure I book somewhere that supplies towels

Most of the sleepers looked in poor state when I last visited about 10 years ago. A single car modern unit was working 2 round trips a day at that point. I have photos somewhere of the sleepers but not sure where now!

6 - (this seems too easy) the Hythe Ferry - but I guess the real question is "where" - so I'll guess approaching Southampton

It is the Hythe Ferry. But headed t'other way.

7 being green will be the Gosport ferry

Correct! With location given earlier by stuving.
I’ve a photo somewhere of the Gosport ferry taken from the Wight Ryder almost reverse of your picture!

it came up as "hot-listed",

The key line in the article for those of us in the industry. This means the local authorities have withdrawn it for some reason. The bus company won’t get paid for her journey.

Process is the driver retains hot listed passes and allows travel on that journey once explained to the passenger in question that their pass is withdrawn and they’d need to ensure they have resource to cover any further journeys.

The passenger will almost certainly know why she’s been hot listed. Normally it’s passes that are reported stolen or reported lost.
