Oh dear.......fate can so easily be tempted.
Delays to services between Reading and London Paddington

Train services between Reading and London Paddington may be delayed.
Customer Advice Due to a points failure in the Maidenhead area, trains are currently running at a much reduced speed through the affected area. This will lead to congestion and further delays as trains make their through.

I'm pretty neutral on this although a little confused that many on these pages constantly bemoan the fact that the Government exerts too much influence over the day to day running of the railway but now express approval that they will have much more control going forward. Can someone set something out, perhaps in bullet point form, how this proposal will benefit customers? I'm thinking in terms of services, reliability, capacity, infrastructure, cost, efficiency but avoiding ideology? Many thanks! I'd say the list would be a short one Nationalised industries, in their heyday, rarely achieved the advertised potential. Maybe investments would be planned, and even started, but some crisis would come along, and The Treasury would just cut back the funding, leaving the project falling short or not happening at all. Plus ca change If anything is under the control of politicos, the only things that matter are the electoral cycle and the headlines. And that applies whether the thing being controlled is in public investor or private hands. Politicos are far more interested in their careers and in having control, than they are in making life better for the fools who elect them Some very astute observations there. This is a low risk strategy by Starmer I think - nothing like as risky or radical as messing around with Health, Education or Defence (sorry "defence"), far fewer votes at stake but it very much appeals to his party, especially those on the Left who remain to be convinced by him and wonder what he stands for. I wonder what's next?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1vwew2wx00oModel train manufacturer Hornby has blamed falling sales on delivery delays linked to attacks on shipping in the Red Sea.
The Kent-based company, which specialises in toys and collectibles, said its sales declined 8% in the last quarter.
It said the decline was partly driven by delays to deliveries via the Red Sea, with the movement of some container ships being pushed back from March to April.
Container shipping firms have been forced to re-route around the Cape of Good Hope in response, adding weeks to voyage times.
Iran-backed Houthi rebels are behind the attacks in what they say is a campaign of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza amid the Israel-Hamas conflict. I understand a regiment of Action Men are being flown out by Airfix to provide a deterrent.

There’s a lot to moan about on the railways as we know, but just taking a look at today’s unit allocations on the line and of the 29 trains on the route today, just 2 were allocated for 5-car units - the first up one and one of the evening down ones.
In the pre-IET▸ days on a Sunday it was a mix of 3,5,7, and 8 carriage trains, so quite a leap in the right direction capacity wise on the increasingly busy Sunday services.
As an example, I'm on a journey from Antwerp to Melksham - planned via Dieppe. 5 trains yesterday, and the longest delay was 10 minutes, which did not matter. Overnight hotel in Dieppe and planned for the 06:30 ship to Newhaven - which has been cancelled (they tell me "weather" but I think I smell a porkie) and that one failure out of 6 is the one noted and damages the whole journey. Made all the worse by the last minute information to me about the change, received just a few miles short of Dieppe! There are moderate/severe weather warnings for wind in place for most of England & Northern France so I wouldn't assume you're being told "porkies"......hope the crossing isn't too choppy!
