2971  Journey by Journey / Thames Valley Branches / Re: Crew shortages - Thames Valley Branches on: November 02, 2019, 18:38:40
To me it suggests the decision was taken to sacrifice the Marlow branch to run more services on the main line, or 'reassigned' as Electric Train put it.  If you're short on drivers, is it more sensible to provide more driver only main line trains than cover a branch line which is more easily and effectively replaced by road transport?

Take great care not to twist your ankle in the holes you leave when you move the goalposts  Wink
2972  Journey by Journey / Thames Valley Branches / Re: Crew shortages - Thames Valley Branches on: November 02, 2019, 07:26:04
Surely if there are problems between Reading & Paddington someone has sufficient common sense to put the crew in a taxi?  Roll Eyes

If that’s the best option they would, yes.  Waiting for the next train 15 minutes later would usually be a far quicker option in the case of Reading to Maidenhead.

There were multiple cancellations between Reading and Paddington due to crew shortages. The fact that the Marlow services were wiped out would suggest that common sense did not prevail.
2973  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: 'We're not moving' - when reserving a train seat goes wrong on: November 02, 2019, 07:23:21
And now another one.

Opinions on this one? https://twitter.com/RoadsignReport1/status/1190280703419834369

If he didn't have a reservation then he should calm down. No right to those seats.

Yeah it's not the same - no right to expect courtesy these days unfortunately!
2974  Journey by Journey / Thames Valley Branches / Re: Crew shortages - Thames Valley Branches on: November 01, 2019, 20:48:57
The train crew travel by passenger service from Reading booing on point so if the TV service between Reading and Pad has problem then the crew straggle also they might get reassigned.  The other issue with the Marlow branch is the second unit in the peaks which runs ECS (Empty Coaching Stock) from Reading Depot which means it can get cancelled if there are problems on the Reliefs

Surely if there are problems between Reading & Paddington someone has sufficient common sense to put the crew in a taxi?  Roll Eyes

2975  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Infrastructure problems in Thames Valley causing disruption elsewhere - ongoing, since Oct 2014 on: October 31, 2019, 21:40:02
As if all the crew shortage cancellations tonight weren't enough...………….

Alterations to services at Slough

Due to a speed restriction over defective track at Slough the line towards Reading bound local stopping is disrupted.
Train services running through this station may be delayed by up to 10 minutes or running non stop between Langley and Taplow. Disruption is expected until 18:00 31/10.
Customer Advice
Passengers for Slough from the London direction are advised to change at Maidenhead for a service back to Slough.
Customers at Slough for Reading are advised to travel to West Drayton for onward connections.

Now extended to 19:00.

And if THAT wasn't enough................

Cancellations to services at Maidenhead

Due to a problem with line-side equipment at Maidenhead:

Train services running through this station may be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes. Disruption is expected until 19:00 31/10.

Line has finally reopened,  disruption ongoing till at least 2200.....I guess the cancellations caused by crew shortages should help clear any congestion...... Roll Eyes
2976  Journey by Journey / Thames Valley Branches / Re: Crew shortages - Thames Valley Branches on: October 31, 2019, 17:37:45
Just a co-incidence that two branches are loosing service today?  Or is there a background cause such as preparations for December 15th when TfL» (Transport for London - about) take over many services and GWR (Great Western Railway) will require less drivers?

Well, this is impressive......all cancelled due to crew shortage, including a number of very busy LTV (London [and] Thames Valley) rush hour services. Trick or treat?

2979  All across the Great Western territory / Looking forward - after Coronavirus to 2045 / Re: General election - policies on Transport - what should we look or ask for? on: October 30, 2019, 18:57:14
At the very least I want to see acknowledgement that both bus deregulation and rail franchising have been ideological failures.

Public transport should be publicly managed, be that at national and/or local level. There are no reasons I can see that should prevent models based on what occurs in London being used across the UK (United Kingdom).

All that the privatisation models currently used nationally have done is see profits privatised and losses (aka subsidy) nationalised.

Leaving ideology out of decisions, whether favouring private or public sector, is generally the best policy.
2980  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: 'We're not moving' - when reserving a train seat goes wrong on: October 29, 2019, 18:23:42
Upgrading the customers who had reserved seats is a good result for them but sends out all the wrong messages to those who have selfishly chosen to occupy seats reserved by others and refused to move - they'll feel they can remain there without any action being taken against them other than possibly the disapproval of others.

Surely it's part of the TM(resolve)'s job to enforce this, not just give up and walk away?

I'm sure it used to say something on the back of ticket reservations about there being a penalty for occupying a someone else's reserved seats and/or removing the label?
2981  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: IETs into passenger service from 16 Oct 2017 and subsequent performance issues on: October 28, 2019, 18:18:53
The final long term casualty, 800305, is expected to join the party in a couple of weeks, so barring any (more) collision damage, the whole fleet will then be available for use in time for the December timetable.  It will be interesting to see what levels of shortforms occur then.

Irrespective of the length of the train, if there aren't enough staff, they aren't going to run - how can GWR (Great Western Railway) promise to run more frequent services if they can't round up sufficient staff to run the current service, as is the case today across the region.

It used to be a Sunday issue, now it seems to be every day.

Good question to put to Hopwood perhaps?
2982  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Shortage of train crews on Great Western Railway since September 2017 - ongoing discussion on: October 28, 2019, 17:34:54
How on Earth is this allowed to happen? Working day in the evening rush hour.....plenty of similar cancellations elsewhere too for the same reason.....

Cancellations to services between West Ealing and Greenford
Due to a shortage of train crew between West Ealing and Greenford all lines are closed.
Train services running to and from these stations will be cancelled. Disruption is expected until 19:30 28/10

Many dozens of trainees currently going through the training course.

I guess they've got about 6 weeks to get them ready!
