Four month delay announced today:

Thanks for the background. It fills in the story nicely. These things happen, but it would have been nice for passengers to stations to Bristol to have been given the option of hopping across to the 22:15 for a slightly earlier departure, although presumably that would have generated its own set of logistical issues...
573  Journey by Journey / London to the West / 21:45 Paddington to Exeter 18 Sep on: September 18, 2013, 22:29:10
Deeply irritated with FGW (First Great Western) this evening. 21:45 to Exeter St Davids suffered a front power car failure (sounded like they were having difficulty getting the brakes off). We were detrained on platform 5 and told to join the train arriving on the adjacent platform 4 (inbound service from Oxford). Train Manager advised this would be the next departure. The 22:15 was sitting on platform 3 but there were no announcements to that effect. I tossed a mental coin and decided to stay on the 21:45 which was now showing as 'delayed 22:03' on the app. Of course, the 22:15 pulled away on time and we finally left at 22:24. Always trust your gut instinct!

Only 'Advance' fare types are available as e-tickets. Is that what you bought?

It was a peak fare - so that could explain it.

The app seems pretty good (same as the FCC (First Capital Connect) version) but the ticket I just ordered online (SWI» (Swindon - next trains)-PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains)) was still delivered as a 'ticket-machine pick-up' rather than a barcode ticket to the app. Not sure if I missed something or if that route doesn't yet qualify...  Huh

Well, trains are going past (quite a shock after three weeks of relative silence) but quite gingerly by the look of things. Is there a blanket speed limit on the whole section or is it because there are still various Colas and Network Rail staff pottering around nearby?

Further to what Sapperton Tunnel was saying about a derailment at the weekend:

An engineering train, working on the re-doubling of the railway line between Kemble and Swindon, has derailed causing damage to the track.

It happened between Minety and Swindon, a Network Rail spokesperson said.

The line is currently closed due to ongoing engineering work, and is due to reopen on 2 September.

A spokesman said the extent of the damage was being assessed and they were "working towards" resuming services by that date.

Mavis Choong from Network Rail said: "Two sets of wheels from an engineering train came off the track on Sunday, 18 August.

"One wagon of the train was affected, but remained in an upright position.

"Thankfully, no one was injured by this incident.

"We are currently undertaking an investigation and, once completed, it will help identify the cause of the incident.

"We are also assessing the extent of the damage caused by the derailed wagon, to enable us to make plans to repair the affected infrastructure.

"In the meantime, we are working towards resuming services by 2 September, and commissioning in 2014."

A source, who did not wish to be identified, told the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) it was believed that more than four miles of track had been affected, and the damage would delay engineering work by "at least a week".

The project to upgrade the route between Kemble and Swindon to a two-track operation is part of a ^45m project ahead of the Great Western Main Line's electrification.

The line was "singled" in the late 1960s as a cost-saving measure by British Rail, under agreement with the government.

Adding the second track is expected to allow up to four trains per hour to travel on the line in each direction.

I'm the only man I know with a record player.

I have several. But then, I suppose you don't know me  Wink

Back on topic with a brief sitrep: lots of activity around Black Dog Bridge today - the old single track bed (which is now the new Up track) is being cleared and the ballast relaid. There are still odd sections where there has not yet been any realignment of the old track. Not sure why that might be but hopefully the insiders can enlighten us?

Some more fantastic photos ST - keep up the good work! To save you trespassing, FGW (First Great Western) have helpfully put some shots of the Rodbourne Road crossover on the Pinterest site:

The track slewing machines are on the section at Black Dog Bridge (B4696) this morning. So far, there has been little activity on this section during the closure; so little that, when I used one of the local farm crossings the other evening, there was significant rust on the rail faces. It doesn't take long!

Many thanks for the welcome, Chris. I have been lurking for some considerable time and finding the Forum both highly informative and fun. I'll chime in again when I have something useful to contribute. I'm keeping a close eye on the Swindon - Kemble work from a handy vantage point  Wink

Bad bad bad boys who used ridgiduct so close to the surface, the use of this in the Southern Routes for electrification and plant cabling is prohibited on or near the surface.  The type of plastic used does not self extinguish when it get a light as its meant to be buried.

Most of the cabling between Swindon and Kemble is currently in Rigiduct while the redoubling goes ahead to allow it to be moved around as new ballast is delivered and graded. A lot of the original concrete ducting is stacked lineside presumably to be re-used when the final alignment is put in place.
