61  Journey by Journey / Wales local journeys / Re: Cardiff to Holyhead service on: March 29, 2008, 10:10:54
On a point of order Mr Chairman, is Cardiff to Holyhead really a South Wales local journey?  Huh

I think not.

Does it really matter?

I think not!
62  Journey by Journey / Wales local journeys / Re: Cardiff to Holyhead service on: March 28, 2008, 22:54:49
Dont count on it.

80% of the time they're 158's
63  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Arriva trains wales v FGW - approach to tickets on: March 27, 2008, 22:35:38
When im on a FGW (First Great Western) train half the time they dont even have anyone come around to check tickets especially on the 125 trains.  Even when I used the PMH-CDF» (Cardiff - next trains) service between Newport and Cardiff at the weekend the ticket inspector didnt bother checking on my return journey.

On ATW (Arriva Trains Wales (former TOC (Train Operating Company))) though they almost always check tickets.

For your information the PMH-CDF Service is crewed by Arriva Wales staff, so prehaps they operate double standards??

I was under the impression that was coming to an end in the may TT change?  As ATW wanted out.
64  Journey by Journey / Cross Country services / Re: Voyager journeys on: March 26, 2008, 09:28:13
Remember there are no Paddington-Cardiff services on weekends.

There are literally HUNDREDs of stored Mk2s (Mark 2 coach)

...Yes there are!

With Chiltern, the whole train is First Class

This is a joke, right? I don't often travel first but I would expect something better than a Chiltern Clubman when I do pay the extra.

By first moving Adelantes on to the Cotswold Line, and now going, as far as is practical, all-HST (High Speed Train), FGW (First Great Western) recognised the deficiencies of Turbo-type trains - and I include 168s/170s etc in that definition - for longer journeys and did something about it, so let's give them some credit for that.

It went to all HST after a bunch of whiney commuters somehow got the adelante "issue" into the house of commons a few years back. At which point, FGW agreed with them/the dft to revert back to shortened HSTS.

The change has been coming for a LONG time, stop trying to look suprised.
66  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: STAG Portsmouth-Cardiff Campaign on: March 16, 2008, 00:53:13
Any Padd service to STJ (Severn Tunnel Junction railway station) would just get laden with commuters going to and from parkway. So it's pointless.

Theres plenty of other ways to get to padd if you really need to.
67  Journey by Journey / Wales local journeys / Re: Merthyr Services Enhancement on: March 15, 2008, 15:02:35
I agree. My parents' families all lived in the Cynon valley and when I was a lad (aye!) Dad used to tell me about the time when trains ran up to Aberdare. Little did I imagine in the late 70s that the line would ever reopen, and hard to believe it's been reopened for 20 years now.

When you think about it Wales has done very well for line reopenings, Aberdare, Maesteg, Barry to Bridgend,  Ebbw Vale and now half hourly to Merthyr. Plus new stations such as the Swanline ones.

What about East of the Severn? How long has the campaign for the Portishead line been going? Plus the need for increased services on all the branches and mainlines especialy round Bristol.

Different governmental views, so different things happen.

The WAG» (Welsh Assembly Government - about) are very pro rail, and see it as vital to the countries economy.

Whereas, the London government, dont...

Vote for someone pro rail next election Wink
68  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: STAG Portsmouth-Cardiff Campaign on: March 15, 2008, 15:00:49
I do wonder whether the introduction of SDO (Selective Door Opening) offers an opportunity to stop two South Wales London services at STJ (Severn Tunnel Junction railway station) each way. One in the peak, and one on which Saver fares are valid. This would enable a fairly wide catchment area to have a much easier journey to London, (and Swindon and Reading) than they currently have. Currently they must either change at Temple Meads, or drive to Parkway (which involves ^10 in toll and parking, let alone the time taken to get to Parkway in the rush hour.)

Say 0906 and 1132 arrivals into Padd and 1715 and 1915 departures from Padd?

Or, get a short train Journey to Newport...

And yes, only the morning and a late evening CC service calls there
69  Sideshoots - associated subjects / Campaigns for new and improved services / Re: new Services Hereford to London via Bristol on: March 14, 2008, 14:17:48
"The HST (High Speed Train) off 2020 Paddington to Great Malvern is supposed to stay in the sidings at Hereford"

So out of interest why do they terminate the service at Malvern and not run it all the way through to Hereford?

Because that would be the sensible thing to do  Tongue
70  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: STAG Portsmouth-Cardiff Campaign on: March 14, 2008, 13:23:13
As said before, if they want rail integration, they need to push ATW (Arriva Trains Wales (former TOC (Train Operating Company)))/ CC to retime there services.

I dont see why FGW (First Great Western) should retime there services to intgrate them when it has a minimal benefit for them.
71  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: STAG Portsmouth-Cardiff Campaign on: March 14, 2008, 01:54:56
I have a short phrase for them.

It starts with "not" and ends with "happen", fancy filling in the gaps? Wink

They're being far to optimistic.

What they should be doing is getting ATW (Arriva Trains Wales (former TOC (Train Operating Company))) and CC to retime the gloucester services/ call them at STJ (Severn Tunnel Junction railway station). Not getting FGW (First Great Western) to retime them.

Ah, the Blackbook, a nice machine that. The 13" screen was one of the reasons I'm now on a MBP.

I'm probably going to upgrade my web server to an Xserve soon - then when my Blackberry contract expires I'll definately get an iPhone.

Anyway, back on topic perhaps...  Wink Grin

Sorry to bring this back to the top....

But after getting a bill for ^100 and that is with Oranges maximum data charges......... I went and bought an iphone at the weekend - even at ^35 a month and paying line rental to orange for the next nine months - I'll be quids in with the free data!

So far all I can say is:

Pros: Free data - intuitive interface - small - great browsing - easily connects to wifi - I get a signal at home for the first time ever

Cons: So used to having installed apps on a WM6 I'm getting used to webapps (most of which I didnt use mind since they were a pain in the rear to install if you use a Mac!)

Get web 'n'walk by t-mobile.

problem solved.

^20 a month, unlimited 3.5g broadband

And since my non iphone handset of choice is the HTC TyTN 2 which T-mobile dont do (last I checked) I would then have to purchase a circa ^500 handset unlocked.

I was on about keeping your old phone, and having that for data use Wink

And i doubt you are John Tongue

75  Journey by Journey / Wales local journeys / Re: Cardiff to Ebbw Vale service on: March 09, 2008, 00:24:10
Ebbw Vale service was departing to Platform 4 today - normally a platform only used for services terminating or going West towards Bridgend and beyond. Perhaps it was to avoid using Platform 0 again at weekends (Notts service went from Platform 1) or maybe they just used a terminating train.

What time did you use it? As on peak services it doesnt do plat 0 due to the amount of people who wait for the Notts train
