I think a Journey time of 8 hours from Penzance to Aberdeen would be Very interesting that leaves about 6 1/4 hours from Plymouth to Aberdeen.  Grin Grin Shocked Shocked

But GWR (Great Western Railway) should be able to make better use of the Sleeper Train locos

Due to Corona Virus we live in "Dark Days", the Railways are costing government a lot of money due to the lack of passengers and services are being (generally) kept up to roughly normal services, often with extra coaches to allow social distancing.

But the Corona Virus emergency is only TEMPORARY

Only 1 of 2 things can happen with Corona Virus,

One a Vaccine will be found and life can slowly return to a new normal. or
Two Corona Virus will slowly work it's way through the population, (quite quickly in the case of the USA) and life will return to the new normal.

The new normal will be much as pre-virus but many jobs will have been lost and MANY will work from home reducing Peak hour travel greatly, but remember per journey Season ticket holders generally have the Cheapest tickets. There may well be a change in rush hour train services.

But the Governments greatest task will be to get Britain working and the Economy back on track.

Construction is a great way to get things moving, well new offices won't be needed, to many working from home, New hospitals and Schools would help, New Electric (ONLY) vehicle Motorways are an idea, but building (rebuilding) railways and electrification of existing lines of would be a great way to get Britain working again.
And rebuilding the Waverley route back to Carlisle, Rebuilding the LSWR (London South Western Railway) from Exeter to Plymouth, and a NEW railway from Okehampton to Launceston (electified) and on to the Cornish main line at Bodmin would be a good start.

I got 8 out of 9.

But who put the quiz together, on second question there is an Error!!

Caption states "Cyclist is going straight ahead, Car turning left"

But BOTH Car and Cyclist are indicating turning left  Grin Grin

A BR (British Rail(ways)) civil engineer (now long retired) who worked on OTP  told me (around 1990) that years ago a King DID» (Didcot Parkway - next trains) work into Cornwall BEFORE the RAB was strengthened!!!

Guess the Loco Crew were award a BR FORM 1 (please explain) for there efforts.

I wonder how it got back to Devon, I often wonder if it was worked to Bodmin Road reverse, Bodmin General reverse,  Wadebridge Reverse and then along the North Cornwall line to Okehampton and on to Exeter or Plymouth.

50  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Problems with the Night Riviera sleeper - December 2014 onwards on: August 02, 2020, 16:08:46
I doubt the DfT» (Department for Transport - about) or the Government would want a rerun of the Save our Sleeper campaign.

Sleeper Trains have become very popular in Britain over the past 15 years and even in Europe there is increasing use of sleepers after an initial decline.

Covid will be over someday.

Would have thought GWR (Great Western Railway) would have taken 6 class 43 HST (High Speed Train) power cars converted the ETS (Electric Train Supply) to 850volt for use on the Sleeper service.

53  Sideshoots - associated subjects / Campaigns for new and improved services / Re: Across England and Wales - the Railfuture list of supported projects on: April 22, 2020, 20:36:42
Whilst Railfuture is a well meaning lot, they as a National Society are really missing a POWERFUL trick.

Each Area of Railfuture is campaigning to their local MP (Member of Parliament)'s for improvements, example the South West Branch would be supporting the Bere Alston-Tavistock-Okehampton- Exeter reopening.

But which knocks down a door fastest, a 1 lb hammer or a 14 lb hammer?

If Railfuture worked as one body and decided which, (by holding a national vote) was the most important line to reopen then badgering ALL the MPs about say reopening Colne to Skipton, it would have far greater chance of being Authorised.

I'd be very happy to badger my south West MP with Emails supporting this North West reopening.
And when the Government approves this reopening then as a society they move on to project number 2, that HAS to be in another Railfuture area, that could be reopening Leicester to Burton-on-Trent.
I'd then badger my MP about the Leicester Burton line.

The BIGGER the hammer the faster the work is done. Cheesy

There is absolutely no reason for the toilets to smell so bad on Voyager units.
Whilst it might be that the toilets should be drained down more often, but when they are emptied the toilet should be given a measured dose of Thetford Aqua Kem Blue a strong odour destroyer.

More to the point how come the voyager fleet have been running around for the best part of 20 years without a proper refit, time that most coaches were rebuilt with smaller toilet units and additional seating.

The time table shown is the Western region service, there won't be many if any London to Weymouth through trains.

London Waterloo to Weymouth is a Southern region service, and I'm sure there were plenty of trains Waterloo to Weymouth and a few to Weymouth Quay.

As built Dorchester South was a terminal station and when the Southern line from Dorchester to Weymouth opened trains from London arrived in Dorchester South then reversed out before going on to Weymouth, Trains from Weymouth to London passed Dorchester South and then reversed into the platforms before going on to London.

I believe there was a new platform built on the Weymouth bound (Down) line years before the up side platform was built, so for years only up services reversed to call at Dorchester South.
59  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Steepest Gradient on GWR? on: April 18, 2020, 13:33:49
In the early 1970's, I'd guess 1974 I was on a Peak hauled Train, load 13 MK1 coaches and Passenger full Brakes (BG (Brake Gangway (carriage))), that came to a stand halfway up the Lickey incline, (I seem to remember at a Red signal, fantastic place to put a Home signal) I thought this could be interesting as I didn't think the loco could start such a Heavy load Around 440 tons without Loco weight on the gradient.
It did mange to get moving but I think we got no faster than 15mph by the top.
And I don't recall if it was a Crompton Parkinson Peak or a Brush Peak.
On another occasion a shorter Train about 9 MK1 coaches, I was surprised to find the Train got banked, by the Licky Bankers, very strange to have engines to come up behind a MOVING Train and give a shove.
Something else Mr 'Elf and Safety couldn't enjoy doing, so Mr Elf has outlawed it. Tongue

What's the difference between a Puffin and Pelican Crossing?

Regardless of Puffin or Pelican crossing whom has noticed that these Crossings NO LONGER had audible Beeps whilst the Green Man shows.

2 reasons for this the Audible Beeps had to be silenced between 23:30 and 07:00 and were of no use to those who are Deaf and the beeps were replaced by a rotating Knob underneath essential for the Blind.
