Agree that it is time to give up on the wretched units, at least for long distance express services.
Relocate them to other operators, if anyone wants them, or redeploy them within GWR (Great Western Railway) to outer suburban, regional, or other secondary routes.
Use on slower services should increase reliability as the engines are less stressed.

ooooooooooooooz gonna pay for it!
The Treasury are already cutting back.  Can't see them seeing sense just before an election

10:20 Penzance to London Paddington due 15:27
10:20 Penzance to London Paddington due 15:27 will no longer call at Tiverton Parkway and Taunton.
This is due to a fault on this train.

1A84 - non stop Exeter to Reading.
Guessing door problems at the intermediate station calls.
Surely if there is a door problem, it will be present at all the station stops?

Sorry Sid.
As a bus driver, I'm not on the cyclist side on this debate.
I have expressed my views in previous posts.  Roll Eyes

Wot?  No Taunton?
As an aside.
Where did this Taunton 'thing' originate?
Been going on years now

*Re-reads Realtime Trains* Ah, I was wrong, no stop at Reading, so Paddington to Exeter non-stop, despite which it stayed around an hour down throughout.

Mark
Don't understand how it didn't make up time for that length of journey.
Something amiss?
277  Sideshoots - associated subjects / News, Help and Assistance / Re: Cancellation map - what it's showing on: July 27, 2023, 12:49:28
As to what happened, the story I heard was that after one particular epic 12 hour crossing in terrible weather, the combined tourist associations of everywhere bandied together and told them:

"You can't be doing this any more. Cease with the heroic approach, yes, you're getting people to where they want to be but after they leave, they never return to Scilly."

Mark

They do now have the option of two flight companies (unless the weather is bad, when passengers are all transferred to the Scillonian!).

Cancellations to services between Taunton and Reading via Westbury
Due to a fault with the signalling system between Taunton and Castle Cary trains have to run at reduced speed on the line towards Westbury. Disruption is expected until 16:00 27/07.
Train services between Taunton and Reading via Westbury may be cancelled, delayed or revised.

So the fault has transferred West!

That's the problem with a centralised system unfortunately.
Our Maritime Radio services went down a remote control route, it worked OK'ish after a fashion. Was heavily reliant on engineering services to kick something back into life; or BT line engineers to poke bits of wire somewhere.
The Coastguard thought this was a wonderful idea, so went down that route.  It works after a fashion, but I don't know their attrition rate.
Then the Fire service started remote working, as did the Police and Ambulance.
Remoting was to be the saviour of mankind. Would cut costs and reduce the need for 'people'.
Just about every industry now has remote/central control.
Not really impressed by it.
279  All across the Great Western territory / Meet the Manager / Re: Written Question K - Interchangeable bus and train tickets? on: July 27, 2023, 12:34:30

Lessons

1. We have both bus and train public transport services but they are not properly connected.

2. We have severe reliability issues on the BUS

3. We have information systems leave a lot to be desired.

And those lessons come from what should be a straightforward journey home.  No wonder many of us public transport advocates wring our hands in despair when we look to promote public transport to newcomers who could so easily use their petrol or diesel car.

It's not only the trains that have reliability issues unfortunately  Cry

Picked up this reprobate in the 'burbs before a long bus ride to our chosen place for an evening meal. Where was bobm?

Is it me!
I don't have a picture or map on this one.
Just the "Picked........" etc but nothing more.

I knew the old eurotunnel TBMs would come in useful. Avoids chucking up on the Scillionian

Time was when the Scillonian sailed regardless of weather.
Occasionally spending the night anchored off in the bay!
Something happened (slightly before 'elf n safety) and if the forecast wasn't good, she didn't sail.
Went on her as a relief sometimes. Was fortunate not to suffer mal-de-mer at any point, and there were a few good rough ones.

Elizabeth line are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice. Arrangements have been made for Great Western Railway rail tickets to be accepted for these journeys.

Surely the Elizabeth Line uses the same signals/points, etc as GWR (Great Western Railway), so how come they are apparently running, but not GWR?
284  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: TfL plan to scrap Travelcards on: July 22, 2023, 12:47:50

That changes though ... there seem to be a lot of young people aged 16 or even 17 who downgrade themselves to 15 when travelling by train.

Oh yes.
Frequent story on busses "Child single/return please" when clearly not a child!

Also working.
As a side note, 'tea time' is not good for me. It's tea time!
