2596  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: MetroBus on: November 20, 2018, 11:08:16
I'm not sure if it's been mentioned already, but the Brizzle Post is reporting that the recently-struck Gypsy Patch Lane Bridge will be shut for two years (or perhaps 344 days, they mention both periods of time) while the bridge is rebuilt to allow the Metrolbus under it. But they make no mention of whether rail services will be disrupted.
https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/road-bristol-going-closed-two-2235378

Just to be clear, this is not Hatchet Road bridge (the one by Parkway which was hit by a bus the other day) but Gypsy Patch Lane bridge, which is to the north-west on the South Wales line. I think this is another example of Metrobus money being used to fund a long-overdue road improvement - it'll be much safer for cyclists and pedestrians too.

Ooh, is that an RE (Religious Education) or an LH?

Isn't LH just a Bristol RE variant? Long (36ft) and High frame.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_RE#Variants

No. LH ≠ RELH

Possibly not what people had in mind when they asked for more pictures, but here's what today meant to me.

First is Clifton Down, getting back to its busy self;
Second: School run completed, stress-free, for the first time in weeks!
Finally: Pity they couldn't have done something about this while they were at it...

Interesting graph - the curve post-2010 is steeper than ever before!

Credit where credit is due. Well done, Network Rail.

Absolutely. Bloody brilliant!

2607  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Renumbering platforms at Bristol Temple Meads on: November 18, 2018, 20:47:29
That'll be this one then, which survived because these platforms were out of use during the last renumbering, and was protected by listing when they came back into use:

2608  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Renumbering platforms at Bristol Temple Meads on: November 18, 2018, 19:32:04
But the OS (Ordnance Survey) 1:500 plan of 1883 says they were 4, 5 and 6 - 1, 2 and 3 being in the Joint Station. At that date a platform could have two faces, as in France today. But - this being the GWR (Great Western Railway) - 4 & 5 were end to end.

Of course! They would have renumbered them in the 1930's when the Culverhouse's new platforms were added beyond the main shed.
2609  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Renumbering platforms at Bristol Temple Meads on: November 18, 2018, 18:54:59
Renumbering 15 to 14 would break the convention that London-bound platforms are odd whilst Exeter-bound are even - which might confuse some people. A hang on, 0 is an even number!

any renumbering will be confusing for a time, but really it is inevitable if the old train shed is to reopen.  What numbers did those platforms have before?

12 (now 1), 13, 14 and 15, according to Wikipedia. Presumably the old scheme dates back to the 1870's expansion.

I think a better three letter code for IBM would have been to use the three preceding letters of the alphabet.

I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen...
