The body of a man has been found on tracks near Bridgend station, prompting an investigation by British Transport Police.

The discovery was made by a train driver at 08:21 BST on Saturday.

Officers have been at the scene throughout the morning and say the death is being treated as "unexplained".

The inquiry has led to train service delays and passengers are being advised to check travel arrangements.

A police spokesperson said: "British Transport Police are currently dealing with an incident at Bridgend railway station after receiving reports from a train driver of a man's body on the tracks just outside the station. Officers are currently at the scene working to establish the circumstances surrounding the man's death, which is currently being treated as unexplained."

Young man killed after being hit by passenger train at Bridgend

A young man has died after being hit by a passenger train just off a railway platform.

The driver of the 6.46am train from Bristol Temple Meads to Swansea alerted police after the 23-year-old man from Bridgend was hit at 8.20am at the end of a platform at Bridgend Railway Station.

South Wales Police confirmed a body had been found on the tracks, and that the man was local.

A spokesman said: "We received a call from the British Transport Police at 8.23am saying they believed they had a body on the line at Bridgend Railway Station. Our officers were there with the Transport Police and located the body. Bridgend is a close-knit community so we were able to identify the young male quite quickly."

A spokesman for British Transport Police spokesman said officers at the scene were establishing the circumstances surrounding the death, which was being treated as "unexplained". There were severe travel delays to all trains travelling through Bridgend.

Commuters were left stranded on trains and on platforms as services west of Cardiff were cancelled for around two hours.

All services were cancelled between Bridgend and Maesteg, there were long delays between Swansea and Bridgend, and services between Cardiff and Bridgend were sent via Barry and Llantwit Major.

Police appeal for information after man found dead at Bridgend railway station

The man, who is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be aged 23 from Penarth, was found dead close to the tracks approximately 40 yards outside the station at 08.21 hours yesterday, Saturday, 5 May 2012.

Officers from British Transport Police are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the man's death which is currently being treated as unexplained.

Chief Inspector Sandra England said: ^We are treating the death as unexplained at this stage and are currently working to piece together the hours and minutes prior to the man^s death, and to look and why and how he ended up on the tracks. I am interested to hear from anyone who was at the station from 08.00 on Saturday morning who may have seen the man, or may be able to provide any other information that may be able to help us with our enquiries.
