From the Cornwall Railway Society website http://www.cornwallrailwaysociety.org.uk/index.html

Quote
Hot news this week is that Network Rail has received no objection to lifting Falmouth Loop and Docks Connection and recovering the two Ground Frames during the 2013/14 financial year. No doubt your local sources will be able to find out the dates when published. In 2011, this connection was placed out of use for two years, but no traffic has materialised. A far cry from the 1970s when dock land was reserved for a Freightliner Terminal; land which on my last visit has never been built on.

Jeez, weird. Only 2-3 years ago it was cleared of weed growth and many rotten sleepers were replaced.

Didn't Richard Warwick on this forum suggest that options were being explored for a freight service into the docks...also a suggestion that the Penryn loop was deliberately installed long enough for freight. Of course, I may have got this completely wrong.

Caliwag, indeed I did, I believe at the time I linked my source to the post. It was about the same time the rotten sleepers were replaced.

This suggests possibilities for freight was being explored
~(not the same source as previous I dont believe)

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/3332/falmouth-truro.pdf

It was previously discussed in the "Falmouth branch line - engineering work, closures, incidents (merged topics)" Topic, however being 25 pages long, may need specifically searching for!

Caliwag I noted on page 21 of that thread you provided a link to a source suggesting freight activity

Many new freight flows for have been rumoured over the years, most never being more than rumours unfortunately. It's strange that Network Rail are going ahead with the lifting of the yard, given that if Scotland does vote to break away from the UK (United Kingdom), then everthing nuclear from Faslane would be coming south, with Falmouth being one of the sites for storage, mentioned by some sources, as Devonport wouldn't have the capacity to do so.

Maybe by lifting the yard, more finance would be available to create a new yard if this happened with the cash coming from government instead of NR» (Network Rail - home page)!

On another note, should consideration be given to closing both Falmouth Town and Docks stations, with a new all purpose one being built on the flat between both existing stations....... thoughts anyone!

A new station between Docks and the Town would be a bit far from the town for me, Town station is already a bit of a walk from the town, especially some parts as the town is fairly spread out.

The only issue doing this would be access, the land between the two are surrounded by housing, there would be no car parking facility without scatting down the houses.
Not many people use the train to go to Falmouth Town, Barring the hill at Penmere, Penmere is better situated for the town as the main area of town is the Penmere end

Aye...leave it as it is to my mind. It's all a gradient from Penmere anyway.

Just before the Ocean Bowl site, the area is quite flat, where there were a number of sidings in the past, area is all overgrown now though. It would be straight forward to site a modern platform there, with car parking.

The problem we experience on trains at Falmouth Town is the gap between the train and the platform which does pose problems/difficulty to elderly and disabled passengers and is time consuming with passengers with luggage.

Could be funded by developers, who could build further student accommodation on the site of the Docks station as a trade off.

Disappointing news in light of Heathfield's resurrection, for example.

Although it feels a little churlish to complain when you consider the investment made into the passenger service on this line.
