John and Sylvia were good mates - in the same crowd, though they didn't hang out as a couple. But then one night they were down the pub, and all their crowd had moved on. One drink led to another and they ended up staggering back to her place, as her parents were away and it was just around the corner. Well - you can imagine what happened and Sylvia found herself with a bun in the oven. They talked it through, they decided to make a go of it and - 9 months later - along comes little Katie. A sweet, lovely little girl who both John and Sylvia adore.
But alas, John and Sylvia don't really adore each other and living together isn't working out for them, so Sylvia end up with her parents and brother Arthur (and Katie), and John finds himself a flat in Trowbridge. Katie grows into a little poppet ... and John sees her and takes her out as much as he can; he's no mean father, though he does rather resent the amount of his pay he has to pass to Sylvia rather than to the Barman at the Pitman.
"Can I have a fancy haircut like SHE has, Daddy" asks Katie one afternoon they're together, and daddy says "yes"; to his surprise, he enjoys waiting in the hair dressing salon, and seeing all the ladies coming in to have their hair done. Katie is quite a sight when she's done, Dad's wallet is lighter but the two of them are on clound 9.
That's ... until John drops Katie back home. And Sylvia goes ballistic ...
How do I know this? I was seated across from John in the quiet carriage of the train yesterday evening as he poured his heart out over the mobile phone to Arthur, using Arthur as a go-between to reach Sylvia. "It will grow out - it's not as if I had 'I love Mummy' tattoed on her head ...
