Best local foods served on Looe Valley train line in month-long promotion

Diners on the Looe Valley Line enjoy lunch from The Old Sail Loft, Looe, served by Chef Adam Tyndale-Powell Picture: Sean Hernon

Passengers travelling a scenic Cornish railway line have been sampling food from some of the area's top restaurants.

A month-long promotion will see some of the most talked about restaurants in Looe provide free samples to customers travelling the Looe Valley Line.

The award winning "munch-time express", which returned on Tuesday, is aimed at promoting the local restaurant industry.

This month The Old Sail Loft; Barclay House; Ocean & Earth Thai Restaurant; The Blue Plate Downderry in Looe and the Plough at Duloe will all be taking part.

Rebecca Catterall from the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership who helped organise the event said: "There are many excellent restaurants in and around the Looe Valley and this event is a great opportunity to sample some of their food whilst enjoying a trip on the Looe Valley Line."

First Great Western, which operates the line, runs the UK (United Kingdom)'s only on-train fine dining restaurant. General Manager David Crome said the initiative follows in the same vein. He said: "First Great Western is committed to supporting the communities we serve and, surrounded by some of the best ingredients in the World, we are happy to announce the return of the munchtime express.

"Following the ethos of our Pullman Dining, what better way to keep people moving than to let them do so while discovering some of the hidden food gems in their area, with produce cooked and presented by our own local restaurateurs."

It is the fourth year the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership has run the scheme, which in 2010 was named best marketing event at the Community Rail Awards.

The train leaves at 12.47 from Looe station every Tuesday until December 3, returning at 1.50pm.

For more information or to book a place on the train call 01752584777.

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

This, I assume does not refer to the...er, digestive effects of the food offered.  Smiley

Gallop???  I'd fall at the first fence, assuming I even got that far!  Grin Grin

However I agree this promotion should most definitely be checked out.

As the boys seem determined to impose themselves upon the Looe Valley Line, if only to avail themselves of this free food, the following additional information from the official First Great Western press release may be useful:

Quote
All aboard the Munchtime Express ^ Award winning food event returns to Looe Valley line

The award winning Munchtime Express, an event to raise the profile of the Looe Valley Line and local restaurants, returned on Tuesday 5 November.

The month-long promotion will see a different restaurant board the First Great Western service each week to offer train passengers free samples of their food, while travelling the scenic line from Looe to Liskeard, return.

The Looe restaurants taking part will be: The Old Sail Loft; Barclay House; Ocean & Earth Thai Restaurant; The Blue Plate and the Plough at Duloe.

Rebecca Catterall from the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership, which is helping to coordinate the event, said: ^There are many excellent restaurants in and around the Looe Valley and this event is a great opportunity to sample some of their food whilst enjoying a trip on the Looe Valley Line.^

First Great Western^s General Manager West David Crome said: ^First Great Western is committed to supporting the communities we serve and, surrounded by some of the best ingredients in the World, we are happy to announce the return of the Munchtime Express.

^Following the ethos of our Pullman Dining, what better way to keep people moving than to let them do so while discovering some of the hidden food gems in their area, with produce cooked and presented by our own local restaurateurs.^

The FGW (First Great Western) service leaves Looe station at 1247 on the 5, 12, 19, 26 November and 3 December for one round trip, arriving back at 13 50. Normal train fares apply. An Adult Off Peak Day Return fare from Looe to Liskeard is ^4.00. GroupSave allows four people to travel for the price of two Adult Off Peak Day Return fares.

Those wishing to travel on this year^s Munchtime Express should contact the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership in advance to ensure a place on the train by calling 01752 584777 or email railpart@plymouth.ac.uk

This is the fourth year the Munchtime Express has run. In 2010, the Munchtime Express won Best Marketing Event at the National Community Rail Awards, held that year in Sheffield.

Those GroupSave fares seem remarkably good value to me: a group of four can travel for just ^2.00 each - return - and with the chance of meeting a couple of minor celebrities on board.  Bargain!  Shocked Roll Eyes Grin

As expected, I took a ride on the train today and was pleasantly surprised by not only the food on offer but also the popularity of the event.

Supplying the food today was the Ocean and Earth Thai restaurant.

On departure from Looe (1247), the main was served. It was a Chicken Matsuman curry which they managed to serve hot! Although not the prettiest of dishes, it was certainly very tasty!

After a drink of Lemonade around Coombe Junction, the desert was served on departure from Liskeard (1318). Desert was a Honey, whiskey and lime dressing tropical fruit salad which also went down very nicely.

Around 45 people were present for the return trip amongst a couple of puzzled travelers! All enjoyed the food and enjoyed the novelty of being served food on a crowded 153!

Certainly a must do for certain members on this forum!  Roll Eyes  Wink

That looks much better than the first class offering of an egg sarnie on East Coast between Edinburgh and KX this afternoon.
