That explains a lot.

There had been problems operating trains during heavy rain earlier in the year as water rose above the rails but I thought it was strange when I was there last week when there hadn't been any rain for a few days but water was very much in evidence.




However I have to admit I ddin't detect an odour.

The trackbed was a bit drier over the last couple of days and the ballast did look a bit shitty. Literally.  But (as you say) odour free ...

It's probably ground water after the wettest winter for 250 years Radio 4 this am. It's still raining here as i type. Don't forget most of lowland (flat) Britain was wooded bog only a couple of thousand years ago so it's nature getting its own back and reverting to type.

Chalvey Treacle Mines by the M4 have been ponging a bit lately, probably due to the volume of water they are dealing with.
