Author Topic: New road bridge over the rails at Newbury racecourse  (Read 5248 times)

As a result of the development at Newbury racecourse a brand new bridge is being built over the railway at the eastern end of the racecourse . This will be accessible via a new roundabout where hambridge lane joins into hambridge road.

It looks like the bridge is making good progress in terms of construction almost to the point where the "lintels" which will form the roadway over the railway will need to be lifted into place

So my question is (after all that !) does anyone know of any planned closures on the b&h line when this is likely to take place ?

Could this in theory not be done overnight Sat/Sunday.....?

Quite probably - but I guess that such works need to be coordinated with NR» (Network Rail - home page) to ensure there is none of their engineering works that conflict with the bridge lift. Remember this is a new construction not (as in the case of others) the lift of an existing bridge to cater for wires

Usually it can be done during an overnight possession Saturday night.  That might involve the last train or two being replaced by a bus, but that's not uncommon for the B&H (Berks and Hants - railway line from Reading to Taunton via Westbury) line anyway.

Although many bridges have been raised, quite a few have new decks placed on the old abutments, and some are brand spanking new.  In the case of many of them they've just been slid/lifted into place within an overnight possession.

You are probably spot on II. It does impress me how much can be done overnight - a recent example was the old footbridge at Thatcham station which from memory was removed on a Friday night. It's absence was most noticeable when I drove past on the Saturday morning!

Putting a bridge over a railway needs more than just coordination. Not only do the railway have to agree, I think they can even demand payment.
