There seemed to be plenty of trains in Nottingham when I was up there last week ... totally unscientific, but I didn't see the major overcrowding and in fact there were some pretty empty trains and platforms ... and it was peak hour that I was around!

http://www.savethetrain.org.uk/update/index.html

Does anyone produce average loading figures for trains in different parts of the country between (say) 8 and 9 a.m.?

I can give you "guesstimates" for averages.

0835 from St Ives 5-20 passengers (153)
0743 from Penzance (HST (High Speed Train))(people heading towards Truro-0827 into there) 100-150 passengers arriving into Truro.
0705 from Plymouth  (HST)(as above, is commuter service to Truro) 200+ passengers arriving into Truro (is usually an HST full!!)
0757 from Falmouth Docks 100-120 (usually a 150 full by Truro, or a 153 grossly overcrowded!)
0810 into Plymouth (0604 from Pnz) 100+ into Plymouth (is a 150 usually)
0849 into Plymouth (0643 from Pnz) 100+ into Plymouth (HST)

If thats what your looking for.

Useful information to help build up the picture ... I was very much wondering how it balanced; trying to understand the fuller scene.

Main peak flows in the South West i'd say are Exeter, Plymouth, Truro, Bristol although understandably people commute all over the place!
