Heading for Swindon this morning, I boarded the 0900 PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains) at BRI» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains). Just before we we due to go, there was a message for the TM‡(resolve) to contact the driver. Shortly afterwards, we were told the train would be diverted via BPW» (Bristol Parkway - next trains), not stopping at BTH» (Bath Spa - next trains) or CPM» (Chippenham - next trains). The reason given was "a problem" between Keynsham and Bath, although shortly afterwards the TM addressed us again. This time, he told pax heading for BTH to take the 0907 WSB» (Westbury - next trains) train, and apologised for not knowing the best way to get to CPM. I figured this indicated a problem between BTH and CPM, and feared the worst.

We left BRI 10 minutes late. The journey from P13 To Dr Days junction was somewhat slow, noisy, and bumpy, possibly explaining in part why it doesn't happen out of choice. We arrived at SWI» (Swindon - next trains) 3 minutes late.

I have now seen the Weymouth to BPW service due out of BRI at 0910 was 24 late at Bath, then cancelled between BRI and BPW "due to person hit by train (XC▸ (Cross Country Trains (franchise)))". Was this part of the same incident, or another completely separate issue?

A body was found near the line at Twerton but it was quickly established that there was no railway involvement and the line reopened. The 07:30 London Paddington to Paignton was also delayed by around half an hour.

I think it was. The decision was taken before the incident was deemed "non-railway".

08.50 a Member of public reported a body near the line, all trains on stop BRI» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains)-BTH» (Bath Spa - next trains)
09.03 BTP▸ (British Transport Police) in attendance and trains under caution
09.12 BTP advised the body was far enough away from the line to allow trains to run normally
15.00 - 16.00 up line closed due to forensic search

So the decision to divert the 09.00 would have been taken before BTP declared the line could open.

Thanks plymothian - it was clearly a developing situation, and the TM‡(resolve) was probably telling us all he knew as soon as he knew it. The timings explain it all, except possibly "cancelled between BRI» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains) and BPW» (Bristol Parkway - next trains) "due to person hit by train (XC▸ (Cross Country Trains (franchise)))" as shown in RTT» (Real Time Trains - website). Was someone hit by a XC train?

Confusingly XC▸ (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) is a delay attribution code as well as a TOC▸ (Train Operating Company).

Even more confusingly, 2D05 (GWR▸ (Great Western Railway) 0640 Weymouth to Bristol Parkway) shows as cancelled at Temple Meads "due to a person hit by a train (XC▸ (Cross Country Trains (franchise)))." Of course that does not mean it was, maybe it was only suspected, or it was so late by then (24 minutes) there was little point finishing the trip.
