43002 will be in traffic tomorrow. I doubt there are any plans to repaint it any time soon.

They were correct, due to form 1D57 but due to the 13:28 from Swansea terminating at Bristol Parkway was switched on to 1B63 to Carmarthen.

Modern accessibility regulations prevent the Mk3s from having the full original livery. Doors are required to have a contrasting colour to the body colour. Derogations are allowed for heritage vehicles, but not those in regular passenger service on the network.

So whilst a set of Mk3s could be painted blue and grey, the doors would have to be a different colour, which would rather spoil the authenticity.

Really? Or does that not apply until 1st Jan 2020 (when the current Mrk3s doors won't be compliant anyway, even if painted a contrasting colour)? After all, Chiltern painted their 'Banbury commuter set' in BR (British Rail(ways)) blue/grey (with Chiltern logos) for a while, even though every other TOC (Train Operating Company) (Eurostar excepted, until recently) were going for contrasting doors.

Don't DOO (Driver-Only Operation (that is, trains which operate without carrying a guard)) it, keep the guard (but it probably wouldn't be a bad idea if the driver unlocked the doors on arrival at calling points).

Passenger carrying rail vehicles built before 1999 have to comply with the Rail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations (RVAR) 2010 if and when they are refurbished. Prior to 2010 they had to comply with RVAR 1998 if and when they were refurbished.

Both those regulations are legal requirements that stipulate contrasting doors. The 1998 regulations also apply to new vehicles built after 31st December 1998.

For vehicles built since 2010 the newer European legislation, the Technical Specification for Interoperability for Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM (Persons with Reduced Mobility) TSI) applies. This legislation also requires contrasting doors.

As well as new rail vehicles, RVAR 2010 and the PRM TSI also apply to older rail vehicles (those introduced prior to 1999) when they undergo refurbishment.

That's interesting. I guess there have been quite a few derrogations granted for this rule then, as quite a few refurbishments haven't made stock fully compliant. As well as IC125s, I think most TOCs (Train Operating Company) have refurbished Sprinters without fitting fully-compliant toilets for example.

They still have contrasting doors though....
Which are you refering too? Chiltern's first repaint of their 'Banbury commuter set' certainly didn't have contrasting door colours (despite the contrasting DVT(resolve)). Not my pic by the way.

It makes sense to do what can be done to comply with regulations during a refurbishment. So door contrasts, wheelchair spaces etc.

Toilets are more problematical (and costly).

They will of course have to be done by 2020 if the vehicles are intended to be used in passenger service beyond then. Even then, a Secretary of State can grant derogations if needed.

Now, back on topic. Shortly posting some images from the open day...

I believe the mainline white/grey (as on some of Chiltern's 168s, not quite the same as the silver set livery) now being applied to the Banbury set is the second repaint Chiltern has done. Originally, some of them were in the old Virgin livery (again not mine) and the others had 'InterCity' on them, Chiltern then standardised the rake into blue & grey but with Chiltern logos instead of 'InterCity', I assume by repainting the Virgin ones and removing the 'InterCity' from the others.

Although I have gone off at a bit of a tangent, it is somewhat relevant to this topic since somebody said they would like to see a whole set done in blue & grey to match 43002, which was of course released at the open day. My point was that, since Chiltern appear to have painted coaches in non-compliant livery in the relatively recent past and the set will presumably be retired from mainline service before full compliance is manditory, a full blue & grey rake is perhaps not completely impossible, although unlikely because it would cost money.

The painting into silver was always planned - not sure whether the old Virgin coaches were replaced by other blue/grey ones, rather than repainted - quite possibly, they do own many more that are still in storage - but maybe if not, they were able to get a short derogation as silver was always going to happen, and indeed, nearly now finished.
