Deadline of 14 September to buy British Rail built freight locomotives

Britain’s largest freight train operator, DB Cargo (DBC) has announced that it has put up for sale 20 Class 60 freight locomotives. They are all located at Toton depot near Nottingham and are being offered for sale as seen and must be collected from the depot.

There is not a lot of time to consider a bid as registrations of interest must be made by 12noon on Wednesday 14th September 2016. Whoever wins any locomotive must pay for collection and removal of their new piece of railway hardware. Bidders must register their interest in accordance with the “Guide to making an offer for a Locomotive” issued by DBC.

I guess they're pure old freight engines and you couldn't sandwich a few old carriages between ....

I think I've seen photos online which suggest there's nothing to stop somebody sandwiching a few carriages between a pair of class 60s. They are heavy-frieght locos though, so might be a bit on the slow side for passenger services and as far as I know the passengers had better not expect any heating/lighting/air-conditioning.

Freight engines wont be equipped with ETS^▸ (Electric Train Supply) so no heating or air conditioning on any train hauled thus, unless a generator van is added.
Lighting should be available if older coaches are used, each one fitted with its own lighting supply.

And class 801 IEPs^▸ (Intercity Express Program / Project.) of course - always specified to be hauled by a loco but with on-board electric power supply. That's why I said previously it wasn't necessary to change the order to 800s just to cover DfT^» (Department for Transport - about)'s embarrassment (and the railway's generally). It's only for a couple of years, after all.

The DBC words included: "Freight has suffered a dramatic collapse in the UK^▸ (United Kingdom) as the coal industry has all but disappeared so these 25 year old engines are surplus to requirements, hence the sale." I guess these ones had already been withdrawn from service for repair, but the demand for working locos never go high enough to justify fixing them. However, it certainly looks as if there are plenty of servicable ones sitting around waiting for work - even after TPE^▸ (Trans Pennine Express) have taken some for their new LHCS^▸ (Locomotive Hauled Coaching Stock) sets.

IIRC^▸ (if I recall/remember/read correctly) the Class 60's were built for heavy haul coal trains so they are less suitable for the intermodel frieght which is the growth sector for DBS^» (Deutsch Bahn Schenker - UK website) and other freight operators.

5 October deadline to bid for a piece of railway history

Following their recent sale of 20 Class 60 freight locomotives, some which had not turned a wheel in over ten years, the UK^▸ (United Kingdom)’s largest freight train operator, DB^» (Deutsche Bahn - German State Railway - about) Cargo (DBC) has offered another 24 locomotives for sale. These are the 50 to 60 year old Class 08 350hp diesel shunters.

These are in much demand from preserved railways to private freight operators so expect a flurry of activity by those interested in acquiring one of these locomotives. They are situated around the UK at Toton depot near Nottingham, Bescot near Birmingham, Arpley near Warrington, Didcot, Doncaster, Eastleigh, Westbury,Stoke, Swansea, Knottingley, Mossend and Hoo Junction in Kent.
