When it was just a self-contained portion and not part of a longer expressway, the two options for road capacity increase from Chilton to the M40 were either a 3 lane online upgrade throughout or a new dual carriageway from North Abingdon to J9 of the M40, leaving the A34 north of there as it is. The fully online option would be approximately double the cost at £800M.

Although various route corridors have been suggested in connection with the expressway the situation is still open, apparently even to route the expressway round the south of Abingdon to plug more directly into Didcot - which if you believe the district councils they want to grow to a town with 65,000 inhabitants in the next 15 years.

Potentially four tracking the railway between Didcot and Oxford appears in their planning aspirations.

Funding announced as per the NIC's recommendations today. £110m for East-West Rail as well as the £10m for the development of the Expressway road strategy.

Perhaps not unduly surprising. There has been a huge outcry against the proposal along the south western half of the route, close to a lot of folk who are unhappy at the prospect of playing host to HS2^▸ .

The east-west rail link fills an enormous gap in the rail links between Central Southern & South Western England and East Anglia and links to the north without going through London. There's nothing on this general alignment south of the Trent Valley route used by Cross Country.

By contrast, there's dual carriageway all the way from Oxford to Northampton, and (via a journey between two close junctions on the M1) most of the way to the A1 at Peterborough or all the way to the A1 via the A14. There will also soon be a dual carriageway all the way from Cambridge to the A1 via the A428. If there really is a need for a link between Oxford & Cambridge by road, some improvement or dualling of the A421 and A422 between the A43 and Milton Keynes and the MI and Bedford should be all that's required.
