May be apocryphal but a good one nonetheless:

Many years ago - sign at Liverpool St station proclaims in large letters "Harwich for the Continent"
Underneath someone had written "Frinton for the rest of us!"

The version I heard was 'Harwich for the Continent', underneath which some wit had added 'Frinton for the incontinent' Shocked

Indeed...t'interweb refers to this as far back as the days of LNER^» but the version I read about stated that it was a much more recent Sealink poster at Manningtree station.
