Re: Brian Milne bench "now used all over the world":  Isn't in interesting how 'of their time' these benches are? As 'eighties' as paint that was once red but has now faded to pale dusty pink. They may be used all over the world, but right now I'd suggest they will soon be an endangered species. Still, thank you Surrey 455 for enlightening us as to who is to blame for these abominations.

The shape is comfortable enough, but I can hardly think of these benches without getting a chill up my spine. The holes, which were presumably there to allow rain to pass through, seemed to be just the right size to allow the surface tension to hold it in place ready to soak into your clothes. The same holes were also perfectly sized to allow the wind unimpeded access to your newly-dampened garments. Brrr!

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

I don't think that they're all Community Rail stations, although that was common to many of them.  I also wondered whether the theme was delayed/postponed/cancelled electrification schemes in England vs successes in Scotland, but that doesn't work for all either. So I'm stumped as to the link!

Shotts, correct ... and the link being (just) that they were all very recent pictures indeed - less that 2 weeks old at the time I put the quiz up (Yes, I have been around a bit!)

Shotts is an interesting example of the incredibly long ramps used to provide wheelchair access.  Speaking with someone the other day who has difficulty walking, he said "I can manage steps, but I find the gentle rise of a slope really difficult".  How he curses the Ashchurches and Shotts of this world!
