Today's silly idea.

Would it be possible to run services from Basingstoke to Southampton via Laverstoke Junction. Buses Westbury to Andover and Westbury to Romsey would be less of a drag for passengers?

There's reports that signalling infrastructure was damaged during last night's incident. That's likely to have affected Laverstock North to Laverstock South Junctions too.

SWR» (South Western Railway - about) has culled the service west of Salisbury as well, which does suggest that signalling infrastructure has been significantly affected.

Do we have any idea how long the disruption is likely to last? Purely selfish question as I have to go to Bournemouth on Saturday, and not intended to imply my inability to travel is more important than any other results of the crash.

It's still a fluid situation. The RAIB (Rail Accident Investigation Branch) and BTP (British Transport Police) have to finish their investigations, which won't be rushed. Then they'll hand the line back to Network Rail. With a tunnel involved it won't be a straightforward recovery of the damaged rolling stock. Then there are the repairs to the permanent way and signalling to carry out, followed by testing.

Friday is the cautious prediction but I think Network Rail will be going some to have the line reopened by Saturday.

Things appear to be running smoothly for both GWR (Great Western Railway) and SWR» (South Western Railway - about) services at Salisbury. Plenty of staff around to assist with information for the truncated rail services and the rail replacement coaches.

I've just travelled Southampton - Basingstoke - Andover - (coach) - Salisbury. No problems. Now on my last train, Salisbury - Templecombe.

I suspect, also, they have now discovered the true extent of the damage to the underlying permanent way including the switches and crossings of Tunnel Junction, and associated signalling.

The one train still on its wheels, the front half of 1F30, was seen on tonight's BBC news going through (I think) Salisbury station. I didn't register whether it was being dragged or moving itself, but I imagine the former just because that's how things are done.

Yes, I saw that on South Today yesterday evening and it looked like it was under it's own steam. I guess it would have been thoroughly inspected after being detached to see if it was fit to return back to St Philip's Marsh by itself.
