From the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page):
1. Buy in Advance
2. Split your fare
3. Use a Railcard
4. Travel in Groups
5. Take advantage of Flexible Commuting

My additions:
6. Travel off peak
7. Use Rover tickets
8. Use cheaper routes
9. Claim using delay/repay if you're held up
10. Overshoot / undershoot

And my wider view:
11. Don't travel at all - meet via Zoom or teams
12. Get your entertainment locally
13. Use the bus or coach, drive, get a lift, cycle, fly or walk
14. Stay in a hotel rather than travelling back and forth
15. Take your own food and drink

I've become a big fan of the TrainSplit app. It's just as easy to use as the GWR (Great Western Railway) one and finds splits I wouldn't have thought of. The developers are responsive - I emailed asking if they'd add the Cotswold Line Railcard and it was done within a week. And it's a minor thing, but their privacy policy suggests they hoard your journey data less aggressively than the "big guys" do. Strongly recommended.

Seconded. And you don’t have to share your savings with them either, but you might feel you want to to support their endeavours!

I've used them a bit and they have become my split ticketing website of preference.

Updating my own post - five more of my own recommendations

11. Buy a return not 2 singles
12. If visiting two places, used break of journey
13. For International travel, look at ferry and rail combos
14. Buy tickets ahead before the prices go up
15. Use season tickets
