I could start up about revenue protection on the Severn Beach Line....but that would be topic drift. I thought that "ticket inspectors" haven't been around for many years so it's interesting to see that First Buses view the problem as serious enough to warrant employing these staff. |

Excellent - but a lot of education will be needed to “remind” people that having taken your paper ticket, you don’t scrunch it up and put it straight in the bin.

I have had my ticket checked on First Kernow bus, not often but it has happened.
The only inspector in Cornwall was made redundant shortly after covid, left the business and no replacement since. Biggest issue for revenue dodging I see on the buses is overriding. Passenger has a town zone ticket and rides far beyond the boundary. And using kids m tickets, as drivers were instructed to trust the passenger when they use a child’s ticket. Some are clearly not of child age |

I recall a little while ago in London,a passenger alighted from the bus and got stopped by a RPI▸ . on the pavement.
RPI asked where was their ticket,in the used ticket bin on the bus was the reply.
Battle of wills then ensued,
just wondering if the ticket collection bin on the bus will be sealed.

In Bristol the vast majority of bus journeys are paid by e-Ticket or contact payment.
Whilst e-Tickets are easy to check, but vulnerable to an approaching bus driving past (bus packed?) and the next bus arrives after 10 minutes to your e-Ticket is expired.
Also, how does an RPI▸ officer valid a contactless payment?

AIUI▸ The railway RPI’s have a device which can check a contactless payment has been made (or that someone has ‘tapped in’, even if the journey isn’t complete), so I would imagine the same sort of system will be available for buses? |

The ticket machine has an inspector print out, it prints the last 4 digits of cards that have Been tapped in on that journey. |

Stagecoach's (singles) expire after 20 minutes. They used to give a discount on DayRiders etc. when using the app, but abolished that. I don't bother using their app to buy tickets anymore as there's no benefit to me. In a lot of areas Plusbus undercuts the equivalent day ticket and is valid on more operators if you've combined it with a rail ticket. |
