From The IndependentBritain’s biggest rail rip-offs: 10 journeys that cost £1 per mile or more
As passengers from Edinburgh to London are told they must pay £200 for a one-way, standard-class ticket during a rail strike, The Independent has identified other eye-wateringly expensive train fares.
Ten journeys that cost £1 per mile can now be revealed.

£3 Liverpool James Street to Birkenhead Hamilton Square £3.60 for 1.2 miles
£2.10 Hayes & Harlington to Heathrow Central: £7.40 for 3.5 miles
£1.35 London St Pancras to Stratford International: £8.10 for 6 miles
£1.31 Stansted airport to Stansted Mountfitchet: £4.60 for 3.5 miles
£1.27 Didcot Parkway to Swindon: £30.50 for 24 miles

At £1.50 for less than half a mile, Redland to Montpelier looks like it beats all of these. But it is also one of the best bits of one of the Great Railway Jounneys of the World, worth every penny!

Waterloo East to Charing Cross: £3.90 for 1 mile.
Back in the 1980s I chose to make this journey, then at a much lower fare, because a sudden heavy shower made walking across Hungerford Bridge an unattractive option.

Cardiff Bay to Cardiff Queen Street is now £2.70 for around a mile and Stourbridge Junction to Stourbridge Town is £1.50 for 0.8mile. Edit to add the eye watering £1 for 300 metres on the Kingsbridge and District Light Railway!  |

The Evening Single (available from 12 noon) is £1 from Ryde St Johns Road to Ryde Esplanade. Slightly more scenic is Ryde Esplanade to the Pier Head for £1.60.

1st Class is £10. So £13.33 per mile.

2 chains shy of ½ mile. So £4.20 a mile or thereabouts. If a Royal Marine wanted a pint in the Puffing Billy and didn't fancy a yomp home (Exton to Lympstone Commando) - then it is £2.10 for a slightly shorter journey at 36 chains. |
