From Saltash Rail Users Group :

Quote from: SRUG (Saltash Rail Users Group) (Saltash Rail Users Group)
I am pleased to let you all know that First Great Western have strengthened the capacity on our train for the summer. This follows, continued lobbying from SRUG and other local groups. This means that a number of trains will grow in length from 2 carriages to 3. Most 2 carriage trains have a capacity of 150, with 75 per carriage, so the extra unit will increase the capacity by 50% with an extra 75 seats.

Which trains are affected?

Westbound the 1048 to Penzance will now be 3 carriages. This is an extremely popular service from Saltash, and often has over 30 people waiting, and has been our top priority for extra capacity, and I hope you will all be able take advantage.

Eastbound, the 0753 to Newton Abbot, the 1329 to Exeter and the 1442 to Plymouth will also be extended to 3 carriages. Although not as popular from Saltash, the afternoon services are often very busy and the extra capacity is most welcome. Don^t forget our new 1329. It not only provides a good return to Saltash from the west, but also a direct service to Totnes, Newton Abbot and Exeter. The 1442 connects well at Plymouth with the 1500 Plymouth to London Paddington service.

How have they done this?

Well, sensibly First Great Western, have paused the train refresh programme for the summer period, so whilst for the past 6 months or so 2 or 3 sets have always been in the workshop having the interiors replaced and a paint job, no more will go in until September.

If you have any further questions then please get in touch.

Watching an unrefurbed 150 pass by my office window the other day I thought to myself that the only way FGW (First Great Western) would be able to increase capacity over the busy summer period would be to halt the current refurb program and this from SRUG confirms that. If Pullman had done their job, the plan was to have the 150 refurb completed by May. This hasn't happened with quite a number of 150s still to be refreshed. Still, its commonsense to have the stock available to give increased capacity on lines which see increased usage during the summer months.

I agree. We're seeing a lot of sensible moves from FGW (First Great Western) recently. Looks like the new management is listening and responding.

I have noticed a lot more dogboxes operating on Bristol area services over the past couple of weeks so I take it FGW (First Great Western) have swapped 153s that normally operate on Cornish routes with 150s normally found operating Bristol area services which are a bit quieter during the summer holidays.
