But coming back to the original thread, how on earth can a train depart a booked stop 5 minutes early?

The 0743 Penzance - Paddington is booked to pass this service whilst the unit is at Weston and presumably it was late. Hence the unit was put out in front and having seen no passengers on the platform the guard simply forgot to wait for 5 minutes for booked time.
This was what I said earlier in thread, the guard didn't check his/her diagram. A genuine mistake I'd say, as you would never leave 5 mins early, for fear's of the 'please explain'!

But I was talking about 5 mins, not the odd 30 secs, which I think most regular travellers recognise (even if they don't like when it makes all the difference.)

But at Taplow it is possible to draw up in car by the gate to platform 4 and catch a train in under 30 secs.

But the principle remains the same is the time in public book the lat boarding time or the time the train starts moving which means the doors have to shut and locked before this time?

The train should depart, i.e. wheels start moving, at the departure time. As the years go by, doors seem to be locked earlier and earlier to achieve that aim.
