Rail freight company EWS (English Welsh & Scottish Railway Ltd, now known as DB Schenker Rail (UK (United Kingdom))) is to axe 530 jobs, rail union TSSA» (Transport Salaried Staffs' Association - about) has said.

The union said the Doncaster-based firm has blamed the drastic cut in goods moving by rail for the decision to cut its workforce by 10%.

TSSA general secretary Gerry Doherty and RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers) union leader Bob Crow have called for urgent talks with transport secretary Geoff Hoon.

Mr Doherty said: "EWS has told us that its work has fallen off the cliff in recent weeks. Virtually all steel and car transporting has come to a near standstill."

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

Thats surprising. There seems to be a lot more freight in the Bristol area in recent months!  Im always seein freight trains at BTM (Bristol Temple Meads (strictly, it should be BRI))!

Wonder if FGW (First Great Western) are going too follow suit soon?

FGW (First Great Western) don't run freight services, (unless you count the 08:15 from Yate) Grin so we may well be insulated from the recession.

AFAIK (as far as I know), ridership is increasing rapidly and myself, along with 8 or 9 other colleagues at Gloucester, are part of the latest recruitment programme which took place in the early part of this year.
