I am looking at taking a day trip from Whimple via Bristol (preferably on FGW▸ HST▸ 's) to an interesting place on Monday. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Many Thanks  |

I'd suggest Bath or Bristol. Gloucester will take longer to get to and not so much to see.

TBH▸ , Gloucester is not worth the trek, unless you want to see the very fine cathedral or gaze in speechless admiration at the depot. However, combine your trip with an extension to Cheltenham and you may have the makings of a reasonable day out. If you want to do it in an HST▸ , you will need to get to Swindon. The trip up the valley is quite pretty.
If shopping is your thing, Bristol is always a good destination and also has plenty to see. A side trip to Clifton would also be worthwile Bath is extremely photogenic and is/was? a world heritage city.
Further afield, but giving you some HST miles, Reading has the four leading UK▸ retailers within 200 yards of each other, a large shopping mall right in the centre, riverside cafes and bars and the ruins of an 11th Century Abbey and what was a larger church than St Peter in Rome a short stroll away. Oxford needs no introduction and Windsor is accessible via Slough or with changes, via SWT▸ from Reading.

one day i will spell Gloucester correctly, this is a long shot but if your into doctor who the latest episode was filmed there as well as harry potter (not a fan of that) and as someone else has already said bath is a beautiful place

Oddly enough, I had a really good day out in Bruton a year or two ago. Interesting (and some odd!) architecture, meaning lots of photo opportunities; lovely tea rooms and a couple of fine pubs. All depends what you're looking for, of course.

Why do you want to travel on FGW▸ HSTS? The refurb ones are terrible.
Not sure what kind of day out you want but if it's a rail one.
Can you get a travelcard from Whimple? If you can why not take a 159 to Wimbledon and ride the Croydon Trams to Elmers End (if you've not done it the New Addington branch is spectacular). Then SE to Lewisham and the DLR▸ you can get to West Ham and then to Upminister on C2C to do the Romford Branch then back to Stratford and the Jubilee Line back to Waterloo.
