As FGW (First Great Western) use 142s joined up.  Do they ever use these with one conductor?  If so how well do they work like that?  The reason I'm asking is when Northern run them in multiple they either use two conductors or have problems with doors not opening when they should. Usually 150+142 combinations work better with one conductor though.

the exmouth line has alot of 142 or 143 doubles i have seen two guards on in the past but never seen one in each unit and to be honest when the trains full i have never seen them try to check tickets the closest attempt i saw was asking if anyone needed to buy a ticket, i dodnt know what would happen if there was an incedent to the unit with no guard

When Northern have 2 pacers or 1 pacer and 1 sprinter joined up and have 1 conductor they always check tickets in the back train, but not the front train.  I think it's likely for safety reasons that the conductor is in the other train from the driver.

i have been on a doubled up pacer before and the driver has came out when the guard was in the back and gone nuts at someone for smoking, not sure how he knew he was smoking but i guess that shows that when the train is stopped hes there but what happens if something happens and the train is moving? then again i suppose its no different to the old class 205's and so on

Doubled 143^s were a regular feature from Trowbridge on peak non Cardiff diagrams until the ATW (Arriva Trains Wales (former TOC (Train Operating Company))) 150^s turned up. Oh how we miss the emergency brake application around Bathampton, and the guards efforts to get the door interlock to work properly.  Grin Grin

Back in the good old days the St Ives branch was run as a 6 car set (heritage DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit)'s) which sometimes consisted of a 3 car 118 and three bubble cars! bear in mind bubble cars have no gangways at all! the guards used to get out at every station and go into the next car to do tickets and so on!

the guards wasted efforts as it would not be door interlock when the train has an application while on the move.fault would be the couplers.
