South West Trains has profited from the flooding by telling its staff to sell more expensive tickets to passengers forced to take diversions to avoid inundated lines (link below.)

South West Trains , which angered passengers by raising some fares by 20 per cent in May , instructed guards and ticket office staff not to sell cheaper long-distance tickets via Oxford.

Network Rail has been forced to close the line from Reading to Oxford because of the flooding. It will not reopen before tomorrow (28/07/2007) at the earliest.

When lines are closed because of unforeseen circumstances,  such as bad weather , it is rail industry practice to let passengers travel via alternative routes without paying a further sum.

SWT^▸ (South West Trains) sent a message to staff telling them not to sell tickets via Oxford. When staff asked for clarification , they were told to accept prebooked tickets but that new passengers should be sold more expensive tickets to travel via London.

Naughty! SWT used to be one of my favourite rail companies but they are fast heading down the list. Any co-incidence that it is since it was refranchised?
