It's what politicos of all persuasions have done since for ever. Very few of them will admit it, though. It's all "Government funding" according to most. And it seems that an unhealthy portion of the country doesn't see through it is being funded by borrowing money so cancelling it doesn't free up money for "bribes" or any other purpose......indeed this was one of the main arguments from the pro HS2 minority when others said that the money would be better spent on the NHS. |

It's the perception though... as long as the government convinces the swayable motoring vote that they've diverted money from that silly HS2 to road maintenance it's a win*. Mark *lose. |

Absolutely correct, which makes it even worse. I am instead being bribed with money that doesn't exist. It is interesting, and has been rumoured for a while. The various mayors with actual power oop t'north have been the most outraged by the cancellation, having spent the past 15 years working out transport and building plans on the assumption that HS2 was coming. It does rather give the government a crafty way out if they can broker a deal, because it could be spun as close working with the regional authorities. But wasn't it all going to be built by private contractors using money borrowed from institutions? |

When rail infrastructure is in poor condition, it is common practice to impose a lower speed restriction then previously, in order that trains may still run safely albeit with delays. These reduced speeds sometimes remain in place for years, pending major repairs, or closure. Not aware of this happening regularly with roads ! "temporary speed restriction of 20 MPH for next 5 miles due to potholes" Reduced speeds would reduce the consequences of hitting potholes or other defects, AND ALSO reduce the chance of such defects becoming worse. |

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU▸ is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

The Environment Agency is looking into them. Previous holes have been filled in with no discernible problem, as have other sink holes in the land that were not related to HS2. I don't think there are any schools or nuclear power stations along the route. |

That overhead power-carrying pylon is a tad close for comfort. Imagine the power cuts if that had been on top of one of the sinkholes

I think that's close to where Cecilia is. Florence is a bit further on, at the northern portal, waiting for a suitable opportunity to emerge. That was meant to a minister's hard-hat opportunity, but a number of things recently have made ministers a bit twitchy about doing such things. I don't suppose this helps.

BBC» (Paul Clifton) reporting that Tuesday’s media visit to film the tunnelling ‘breakthrough’ beneath the Chilterns a short distance from the sinkholes has been postponed. A coincidence I'm sure! |
