As you know, splitting tickets often lowers your fare.  However, if you're like me, you don't know the best places to split, and it takes ages to try the combinations! But I found this http://www.splitfare.co.uk/ website, which does all the combinations for you! All you have to do is to pick the cheapest fare... Hope this helps. Regards, Btline  |

Interestingly, it appears that's more than just an advertisement. See http://www.penaltyfareappeal.co.uk/wordpress/?tag=splitfare-co-uk , where they explain: Now working out where to split the tickets can be quite a difficult task to do and requires lots of patience, luckily a new site has just been launched SplitFare which will work everything out for you. The site does link you into the Trainline which will charge you to book tickets and to pay by credit card. You can avoid these charges by simply imputing the journey they suggest into the National Rail booking system or from your local station. |

What?! Is that why it is in "maintanence". That it's being shut down is the biggest load of **** I've seen!  Since I found it the other day, I've only used it for experimental journeys. Typical, damn luck! Oh, the *******! |

I havn't yet used the site.
I'm firmly in the camp that this information should be freely available in the public domain. If ATOC say, as they have on numerous occasions, that split-ticketing is allowed, then someone providing that information shouldn't be threatened with legal action. What about all the individuals on many rail forums (fora?) who give such information. I've done it, can ATOC sue me? Come and get me - I got NFM03 for nowt as well - but I'll never squeal. Oh and can ATOC sue this forum for hosting the information? Someone has taken the time to combine the National Rail Timetable with the National Fares Manual. That can't have been a quick or easy task. They should be congratulated for their efforts in promoting cheaper travel not threatened with legal action. We can get NRT▸ for free, we can get the Rail Routeing Guide free, the NFM▸ should be free as well as it contains information that forms part of the contract between passenger and TOC▸ when they buy a ticket. Information not available when purchasing online or from a TVM▸ and often not available from station staff either. Try getting a straight answer at a station regarding ticket validities on anything but the most obvious point-to-point journeys. Not a critiscism of the staff, more the system. |

Word of warning to those who use it. The results you get are not always the cheapest possible combination as sometimes it may cheaper to split and go by an alternative route rather than the quickest route that this site usually looks at. Someone tried and found out despie saving a large amuount of money, they could havve saved even more.

I'm sure it's not perfect (probably should have used the past tense here), but for most journeys it's fine!
e.g. I tried Birmingham to Durham. It told me to split at Derby.
