Heard a rumour there are now cross-country dedicated fares which are available between Totnes/Newton Abbot to Taunton and I believe Bristol.

Cheaper than FGW (First Great Western) but not available on TVM (Ticket Vending Machine). Caught FGW on the hop I think.

Just asked somebody to look in FRPP, and these are the only walk up fares:
Totnes-Taunton
 rte  Any Permitted
GWR (Great Western Railway)
Ticket type    Restrictions    (S/R)
FOR       R    60.80
FDS       S    30.40
FSR (First Scot Rail)    WG    R    47.00
SOR       R    23.00
SDS       S    17.90
SDR       R    21.30
SVR    WG    R    18.00
CDS (Off Peak Day Single [ticket type] (formerly 'Cheap Day'))    B1    S    12.70
CDR (Off Peak Day Return [ticket type] (formerly 'Cheap Day'))    B1    R    12.80

Ticket splitting works!

I've used a similar method from Exeter to Chippenham which saved me about ^30 at the time and, for some bizzarre reason, NR» (Network Rail - home page) Enq came up with the return suggestion which prompted me to delve deeper as it quoted for 3 seperate tickets.
I got it even cheaper by the outward journey:
Out:
Exeter St Davids-Westbury
Westbury-Chippenham
Ret:
Chippenham-Bristol TM(resolve)
Bristol TM-Exeter St D

All bought online and picked up from machine at EXD» (Exeter St Davids - next trains) apart from the Bristol- Exeter as this was XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) service which was an online ticket printed out at home.

Can't remember the exact amount but the direct fare was approx ^75 and the split ticket option came in at about ^40.
Only got asked to produce ticket for inspection between westbury and chippenham so could have been a lot cheaper!!!

As far as going to London Via Salisbury, this route always seems to be cheaper and, if you choose the right train, takes approx 45mins or so longer for usually about half the price.
If u r not in a rush it's the better option

Cheaper to buy a Taunton - Bristol Parkway, valid via Westbury!
I doubt the train manger would be very impressed though.

You have the NRCoC (National Rail Conditions of Carriage) and the Rail Routeing Guide on your side though.

Sorry to treat this forum as a ticket office:

1. Is there a split available when travelling from Birmingham to Durham?

2. Are there better (and more available) APs on a different route? (via Manchester)

Of course, there was once a very useful website that could answer these questions.... Angry
