Glad I was not stingy and paid for a cab to Wokingham rather than Crowthorn.
Just as I get to Reading, the Banbury train shows cancelled and the all the Gatwick trains are showing delayed. Announcer bod advises that Guildford station is closed due to an incident on a train!
Am intrigued.

According to BBC» Surrey's website, 20 firefighters were called to attend a fire in a train's traction unit at Guoldford station at 5.50pm this evening. Hence all the delays.

The Banbury cancellation was probably the 17.25 from Paddington, going by the running reports here http://www.savethetrain.org.uk/running.phpThere's a whole string of rolling stock issues noted here for yesterday and glancing at the FGW▸ site in late morning there seemed to be a number of short-formed Turbo workings around, so it may well be that by the middle of the evening peak they had run out of stock to juggle around. |

Looks like they had another set of breakdowns as well. From my reading of the current running on the FGW website looks to me like at least 1 HST▸ , 1 Turbo and one of the bristol area thingies all failed. |

Meanwhile, the fire at Guildford station, apparently caused by 'an electrical fault', is being investigated. From the BBC» : Passenger train fire investigated
A rail firm has started an investigation after an electrical fault caused a fire on a passenger train at Guildford railway station in Surrey.
More than 20 firefighters were called to the incident on the Havant to Waterloo service at about 1800 BST.
South West Trains said no-one was injured and services resumed about an hour later. The firm said there had been an electrical fault on the train and apologised passengers for any delay.
A spokeswoman added: "In line with our safety procedures, passengers were asked to leave the train at Guildford as a precautionary measure. There were no injuries to any passengers or staff as a result of the incident. Regular updates were provided to passengers throughout the disruption. We are currently investigating the cause of the electrical fault and we would like to apologise to passengers whose journeys were disrupted. Safety is our absolute priority and services resumed as soon as it was safe to do so."
