From the BTP (British Transport Police) press release:

Quote
British Transport Police (BTP) is launching its Community Volunteer Scheme in Cardiff and Inspector Gary Ash is looking for volunteers to donate their time, and support BTP in their area.

He said: ^We hope volunteers from across the community will bring their specialist skills, local knowledge and, most importantly, a commitment of time to support their community^s officers and police staff.^

Volunteers will be based at BTP^s Cardiff police station, Callaghan Square, opposite the back entrance of Cardiff Central rail station. The office is accessible by lift on all floors of the building.

The station is the base for both uniformed police officers and detectives, who police railway stations throughout Wales. In addition, there is a number of police staff working at the station, who are responsible for viewing CCTV (Closed Circuit Tele Vision), taking statements and intelligence.

Inspector Ash added: ^The scheme is in place to complement the police officers and staff we currently have. By taking on volunteers with transferable skills and knowledge, we hope to make more time for police officers to be seen and heard within their communities. We expect that our volunteers will support with CCTV collection and pre-viewing as well as offering support to the Neighbourhood Policing Team.

^We want to offer a flexible and enjoyable volunteering opportunity that is mutually beneficial. One where our volunteers are able to draw upon their skills and experiences from outside the police force, which in turn enriches and improves the service we deliver both as a national organisation and as a presence within our local communities.

^Of course, as well as community volunteers, BTP is always looking to recruit Special Constables as well. Specials are an important part of our Force and perform a full range of policing duties, from policing planned events to supporting our officers.^

For more information about becoming a Community Volunteer with British Transport Police contact Hannah Watson, National Community Volunteer Scheme Manager, on 020 7904 3623.

Alternatively, log on to www.btprecruitment.com, if you are interested in becoming a Special Constable with BTP.

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.
