Hi,

I was one of those who got caught up in the line problems between Exeter & Newton Abott on March 1st so my day trip down to st ives had to be aborted and I contacted FGW (First Great Western) about compensation, which I recieved a letter back from them today & while I'm happy I got a refund for the whole ticket price, they have sent me a travel voucher which can't be used online!!

I always buy cheap advance tickets online for my trips & these vouchers can only be used at manned ticket stations or via their telesales team & as far as I'm aware it's only possible to purchase advance tickets online, or am I incorrect on that one & I can use this voucher to buy a advance ticket from either a manned ticket office or via their telesales team?

Via telesales for Advance Purchase is fine, but you have to allow sufficient time for them to receive it and then send your tickets. A booking will be made at the price available on the day you first call. If the voucher is less than the value of your ticket then once it is received you will be called and asked to provide debit/credit card details to cover the balance.

It is a bit annoying that you can't take advantage of any operator specific online discounts with RTVs, though.

Advance tickets can be bought at ticket offices, at the same cost as online in most cases.  Some operator discounts, like East Coast and Southern aren't available, but in the case of FGW (First Great Western) the price will be the same.
