VIRGIN Trains will add extra carriages on the Liverpool to London line to boost the number of seats by 25%.

They've actually ordered enough to lenthen most, if not all, their Pendolinos - not just to Liverpool.

There will be 35 11-car sets and 21 9-car sets when the lengthening programme is completed.

The whole story is rubbish really - it has always been assumed that the 11 car trains would be used predominantly on routes with an hourly offpeak service - it's the only logical approach.     

Liverpool council are not actually in a position to demand anything from shortlisted bidders - especially by threatening to refuse to recommend them unless they promise something. Of course much of the confrontational nature of the story is probably down to a local journo who hasn't got a clue about the rail franchising process...

Any suggestions the councillor has should be targetted firmly at the DfT» (Department for Transport - about) during the ITT (Invitation to Tender) consultation phase - that is how local authorities get the chance to affect the new franchise, indeed a bidder is expressly forbidden to discuss their plans publically in this way.
