From the Bristol Evening Post:

Quote
A STUDY could be carried out to examine the possibility of reopening a former railway station in Ashley Down.

Residents will be asked to decide if council money should be spent on looking into the case for reopening the Ashley Hill station at the bottom of Station Road.

The station closed in 1964 after serving passengers for 100 years on the Bristol and South Wales line.

Bishopston councillor David Willingham says money could be spent on a feasibility study to establish if residents would like to see the station rebuilt and reopened.

He made the suggestion after Ashley Hill was earmarked as a possible new station in the West of England Joint Local Transport Plan for 2011-26, which was finalised earlier this year.

The Liberal Democrat said researchers from Bristol University or the University of the West of England may be able to carry out the study for a few thousand pounds.

The former Ashley Hill station is on the main line between Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway, and is between Stapleton Road and Filton Abbey Wood stations.

The stretch of track is due to be electrified as part of the ^1 billion plans to electrify the route between Cardiff and London.

Mr Willingham, a member of Friends of Suburban Bristol Railways, said: "Residents living next to the railway would suffer days and nights of disruption because of the electrification works and will get nothing back ^ just trains which run straight past them. At the moment, the closest station residents have got is Montpelier. As a council we have very little power with regard to delivery but this is a wonderful aspiration."

Mr Willingham said the benefits of reopening the station would need to be demonstrated against the cost, estimated at up to ^3 million.

The idea of funding a feasibility study using part of a ^30,000 Wellbeing grant was discussed at a Bishopston Neighbourhood Forum last month.

Mr Willingham said a recent survey of residents living near the cricket ground in Nevil Road revealed that 80 per cent of them were generally supportive of the idea of reopening the station. He said: "It's about getting our MP (Member of Parliament), the Department for Transport and local people to support it but first we need to prove it's feasible. There's no point getting behind something that can't be done. If we can spent ^5,000 of our Neighbourhood Partnership money to show there's a business case for it, it would be money well spent. The cricket club would quite like it and the City of Bristol College would benefit because, at the moment, students can only get to it on the number 70 bus. It's in the transport plan so we've got a reasonable mandate for trying to put it forward and encouraging people to believe it's achievable and worthwhile."

My personal answer to the question is "Yes", and I suspect the best chance of doing so would be as part of a 4-tracking scheme.

Lots of external interest in this issue, so I've added a poll. It runs for 7 days, and you can change your mind on how you vote right up until the end.

Yes definitely.  Also it would be great if Horfield station just up the line re-opens too. Both stations should never have been closed anyway!

With long term planning there could be a proper Bristol circular service from Portishead to Parkway stoppping at re-opened stations at Ashley Down and Horfield then onto Avonmouth line with a station built to cater for Henbury and a free shuttle potentially at a station near to Cribbs Causeway for shoppers and workers. A fourth platform may be needed at Parkway so that clockwise and anti-clockwise services do not cause to much congestion on the lines but this should not be too difficult as it seems that this has been planned for the future with the current platform numbering. Severn Beach could be catered for by an hourly Temple Meads to Severn Beach so this area would not lose out. This could lead to Bristols version of the Valley lines with electrification allowing a frequent network to help deal with growing congestion in the area. This is of course but a dream but during electrification with the right enthusiasm could be a reality.

With Filton Airfield likely to close, it may even be possible to slew the Henbury line across to the other side of the airfield and have a Cribbs Causeway station, obviating the need for free shuttle buses. Along with a Station at Henbury one should also be built as close as possible to the A38 on Gloucester Road North. With a large car park. Ideal for serving Filton College and all the likely redevelopment of land at the airfield and old Rolls Royce sites. Could also serve as a mini parkway type station removing the need for many car journeys down Gloucester Road to the city centre.

For a 'Bristol Circle' service to work I think the first piece of infrastructure that needs to be addressed is the Filton Bank. Get that four-tracked as soon as.

I don't see the need for taking Henbury line services into and out of Bristol Parkway though.

Looks like the idea is not as unrealistic as first thought.

A reminder that the poll closes in just over a day or so, if you want to vote.

Also, for those interested in the service level available last time Ashley Hill station was open, then a 1963 timetable which covers that part of the Bristol suburban area (and also including Mangotsfield, Severn Beach, Henbury and Portishead) can be found here.

That link is being blocked by Firefox as Google considers as the web site as "suspicious". I'd guess that the site has been hacked by a 3rd party and software inserted into the otherwise normal look webpages.

What happened when Google visited this site?

Of the 28 pages we tested on the site over the past 90 days, 23 page(s) resulted in malicious software being downloaded and installed without user consent. The last time Google visited this site was on 2011-06-30, and the last time suspicious content was found on this site was on 2011-06-29.
